Excellent Monarch images Gary! These are as good as they get. Thank you. You’ve inspired me to post more of mine.
Would you happen to know the species of flower in the second image? Seems I have seen it many times. Oh, is that the Common Milkweed?
All your work with the 180-600 has sold me. I’ll soon test one, and probably replace my 200-500 by the upcoming Season.
I work off a tripod or monopod around and inside my wildflower area. The close focusing of the zoom and that focal-length-range are ideal for my shooting into the wildflowers without disturbing the insect.
Thanks very much Robert. I believe it is Milkweed but that's far from my area of expertise.
I'm finding this lens to be extremely versatile. I don't like going out with multiple lenses. I can walk around with this combo and go from this type of closeup to distance birds and even pull back to 180mm for some landscape stuff.

How is this lens with 1.4xTC?
Any thoughts from frequent users of this lens?
Personally, I would describe it as "not unusable" However, I try to avoid it. First off I don't like being at F9. There is a noticeable hit to IQ. And the tc seems to cause some focus inaccuracies. If you go back a couple pages I threw the TC on mostly as an experiment on the perched eagle. When reviewing those shots at home most of them were slightly oof even though the bird was still. I've got a few more shots sprinkled through here with the tc maybe four or five pages back if you're interested. When you consider the pain off taking it on and off, the loss of light, and the compromised AF and IQ, I'd rather just crop heavier if need be. This is where those lucky folks who own the 600 f4 TC have a huge advantage. All they lose is a bit of light

Lovely!... Is this an Allen"s HB?
I'm not sure Bruce. When it comes to Anna's, Rufous, and even Ruby-throated, the only time I feel confident is if I have an adult male. The juveniles and females all look the same to me. Having said that, if I was forced to choose, yes, I would say Anna's.
Appreciate the comment !

I could be wrong, but I think it's either a female or juvenile male Allen's hummingbird. This species is a "mighty-might"... that is smaller than the typical hummingbird. Where I live, you can find both Allen's and Anna's foraging on similar vegetation. The Allen's are often more feisty than the Anna's.
Regardless, it is an excellent flight shot.

I spent yesterday's sunrise kaying the bay... seals and otters were plentiful.
To make this photo, I used the Z8 and 180-600. I held the the lens over the side of the kayak with the back of my hand touching the water. I relied on backbutton / 3D AF to do the focusing... eye-level is sooo cool.
