Thanks Molson, I had already looked there. Unfortunately, they are selling for more than new price.
I don't feed scalpers, so I'll wait for a new one.
Awhile back I grabbed the dealer list from Nikon's web site and spent some time going through it. For those dealers that allowed it, put my name on a "notify me when in stock" list and it paid off. Got an in stock notice yesterday, went to that dealer's web site and ordered one. I'm a happy camper.
You might try to do the same, as some of the smaller dealers seem to restock pretty quickly.

Thanks Fred, sounds like a great idea.

Bad perch so I had to resort to a portrait Same bird as above. A pretty stark example of the difference in IQ for frame filling shots as opposed to heavier crops with this lens. You folks lucky enough to have the big guns may not notice such a difference.

Is it possible 180 - 600 is not that sharp with Nikon Z6 as with Z7II ?
I took some test shots / distance only 10 - 13 feet. Cameras on tripod with Datacolor SpyderLensCal. Even when I put manual and use in camera live-view magnification it does not seem like perfect sharp ( Z7II does very well)
I need to check again Z6 with 70-200 to see if this is Z6 issue
Anyone using this lens with old Z6

I've found that the 180-600 has been sharp with my Zf (same sensor as the Z6) and my Z9.
I think people expect too much from their lenses and are using the wrong criteria to judge them. Raw sharpness is one of many criteria in which we should consider the optics we use. If you want the sharpest lenses that cover the range of the 180-600, you might consider getting a 70-200 f2.8, 400 f4.5 (or 2.8S) and the 600PF (or f4S). Of course this will require a pretty significan expense and larger bag, but then you'll have the sharpest lenses to use.
Personally, I carry and shoot a 180-600 and 400 f2.8S, both have their purpose... and I never hesitate to use the 180-600 when that's the right lens to use.
cheers,
bruce

I used to think that the 200-500 f5.6 outperformed its price point; I have found the 180-600 to do so beyond that of the F-mount lens. While I'm sure there are copy variations between lenses, I've never experienced this before. While the 180-600 is my "cheap" telephoto lens, there is nothing cheap about how it performs.
cheers,
bruce

I agree with the sentiments that you've shared in the last few posts. Primes will always win at the end of the day, but proper use of a quality zoom lens yields real world results that are very comparable. I've shot the 200-500 and 500 pf and the zoom doesn't lose much to the prime as long as you have a good copy of the zoom. This new Nikon zoom easily bests the 200-500 so I'm sure that anyone would be happy with it outside of fringe use cases (heavy cropping, adding TC's etc.)
I've shot multiple systems and feel that this was true with Nikon 200-500, Sony 70-400, Sony 200-600. I even had good luck with the old school Canon 100-400 if used in the right conditions back when I was first shooting.

Could someone who use this type of lenses confirm this please. From B&H Website ( Questions)
Question --- "Backpack suggestions for the Z 180-600mm with Z9 attached and another 6"-7" lens?"
Answer --- "I think it is a bad idea to carry the Z9 or any camera in a backpack with a lens attached. All the jostling can result in misalignments of the lens and body, not to mentioning weakening the lens mount. The space savings in a backpack are minimal, and the time savings from not having to mount the lens are trivial. Save yourself grief and get a backpack in which you can carry lens and body separately."
- I've never heard of not carrying the lens attached to your camera in your backpack. Is it true or false
