I'd love to know which repair facility you sent it back to. I literally can't even grasp HOW it would be possible to treat a brand new camera that way. I just don't get it. How could it pass any inspection and write off as repaired. Please do let us know which location did the work. I've only heard great things about the California location so hoping I never need assistance. Can I assume it wasn't the California location?

i would assume that since he as put himself in as living on Long Island, NY it would be in Melville as it too is on Long Island. living on LI is an easy drop off.

yes, someone has some explaining to do and Nikon has to resolve this professionally.

actually, i felt that way with Canon just before i went back to Nikon back in 2008. then there were a few items some Sony unrelated to the photography that could have been dealt with better by them too.

I took it too Nikon on 110 off the Long Island Expressway. I live about slight miles from them.

Why if you live only 8 miles away from the repair center would you pick up a camera in this condition then complain here on the forum about the condition of the repair on FM? Why not tell tell them this is not acceptable to begin with? Your lack of vocabulary in describing the repair processes with vulgar language doesn't add to the credibility of your complaint. Just curious to know what's up with your post on the matter.

Wow, I didn't realize Nikon was still pulling the "Impact Damage" stunt. I remember years ago when that was the default line back to the customer on any repair sent to them.

I can see your point, though I would not have said "lack of vocabulary".

Before I walk out that door I am looking at what they said they did and I am going to ask to speak with the person who did the work.

It is the same with a package received. I have a policy that I always follow. When I receive an expensive piece of Nikon equipment I video the whole process, from when I pick it up and as I am opening it. Yes, I have been screwed by Nikon AND/OR UPS. Neither would admit the damage that was done to my 80-400 AFS on return of it BEING REPAIRED!!!

The eyepiece on my Z8 is slightly loose too.

So I called NikonUsa. I believe it is the Melville center. But after several layers into the phone menu this is the recorded message:

"We are currently experiencing technical difficulties and are unable to answer your call at this time. Please try your call later. Thank you." Then a disconnection. I got the same quote one day last week and the "technical difficulties" lasted the entire day.

When I *am* able to reach them I ask for a man who recently helped me with the Z8 menu. He was knowledgeable and said I could just ask for him in the future. Well, over the last week he has not been available and so I have asked for him to call me and have been assured that he would. No call yet.

They seem to be way understaffed.

I've heard nothing but GOOD things about the California repair facility. Glad I guess I wouldn't have to send anything to NY.

Same here, but I video both the boxing and unboxing.

Wow, just wow. What a huge disappointment and probably severe PR repercussion—the Sony and Canon guys must be busting their guts right now… stupid sad QC Nikon, stoopid stupid.

I don't know... it's unfortunate when something like this happens but there is a lot we don't know and except in rare cases I don't think one camera is going to drive negative PR. Now if more cameras including mine have a similar issue when returned then it's a PR problem!

this is a strange post. you claim to live close to the repair center (that's how i interpret "slight miles" at least). wouldn't you deal with them first for the mishandling rather than post here? no repair center is perfect and mishaps are bound to happen...to me it only becomes a real issue with the repair center IF they (in this case, Nikon) did not rectify the mistake.

Maybe he should check serial number... they could give him by mistake another camera which was there for repair

I must also add that last month Nikon repair my other lens and they did super amazing job... I was really surprised in positive way. Having some issues before this time I was really very happy with repair work

Oh yes, we are advised to video-document the boxing and unboxing.

In my 80-400 AFS incident, the corner of the box was crushed in. The impact was so hard that the lens hood (reversed) was off its track and wracked severely sideways. In the end I think UPS was guilty for throwing packages. No way to prove that one and video would not have helped. Eventually, that impact caused the front of the lens to come loose and come off when I forced the hood off by pulling too hard. It all went back to that incident, but I could not prove it.

That incident caused me to begin to video.

Wow, that’s a bummer, I’m sure they will get it taken care of though.

I sent in my Z9 and 70-200 2.8S to the California NPS facility yesterday for a repair. Last week while on my biggest job of the year, someone knocked the combo above off a table in a meeting room onto a carpeted floor. It busted the lens mount off the Z9 and left it on the 70-200 which was not initializing or focusing correctly after the fall and had a rattle. The estimate I got for the repairs is $579 for the Z9 and $738 for the 70-200 but that could change once they actually evaluate it. Other than the lens rattle and busted lens mount, there is no visible damage. I do get a 25% discount on my repairs because my NPS level and my insurance will cover all but $250 of it, client will cover the rest.

Because of this I am not sending my Z8 in until well clear of anymore big jobs because the recall reasoning is not causing any issues for my camera yet.

A one-off incident like this isn't going to cause any PR trouble, nor is it unique to Nikon if one was looking to cherry pick service center nightmares. If everyone was getting their cameras back with the sensor shield broken, then yes it would be a major problem, but that just isn't a realistic scenario.

If anyone needed yet another reason not to send their camera in if they aren't actually having the issue, this thread is a good example Obviously this isn't a normal service experience, but it's unfortunate for the OP and may be a headache to resolve if there is any finger pointing.

As for the impact damage cases, if you saw how couriers and sorting facilities treat packages, that is by far the most likely explanation and also likely explains why nobody wants to take responsibility. I've also seen how some people package up their equipment for warranty work, and it all starts to make sense haha. This doesn't look like shipping damage though, more likely one particular technician that is going to have a sit-down with their boss (speculating of course).

As others have mentioned, best to take plenty of photo & video before sending anything off, then if the burden of proof ever falls on you, there is at least some evidence that it left your hands in good shape.

Good luck OP, I'd be asking for a new camera too.
