They are not a public company, but owned by Zeiss Group. Only one Zeiss group subsidiary is public (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG)
Zeiss Group is owned by the Carl-Zeiss-Siftung foundation, which was setup when Ernst Abbe found he could not donate his shares of Zeiss and the Jena Glassworks to the University of Jena in his will. All three of the owners of the two firms (Abbe, Carl Zeiss's son & heir and Roderich Schott who co-owned the Glassworks) donated their shares to the Foundation.
