The pictures/samples have all been great and appreciated. I can't help but notice how many of them are taken at 300, 420 or 600mm. It does beg the question if the zoom is really helping that much as opposed to the 300mm prime.

Last Saturday, I used mine in a run-and-gun event photography scenario and found it versatile and perfect for that type of work at all focal lengths.

A fix 300 you could get away for horse showjumping but for ice hockey or other sports you would be changing back and forth between 70-200 and 300 so there the versatility is even more important.
But here an example of covering two jumps in sequence instead of 1 from the same position for the same athlete:
Even better example while filming, started at 420mm finished around 200mm (unedited sequence 120fps 5x slow-motion, I filmed the whole run and there you zoom in and out a lot):

My doggie shots are all over the place and a few of the mallard shots are under 200mm. I use the zoom a lot with Kenzie. As far as the 600mm shots. I was asked to test that range so I have been posting them. Is the zoom helpful yes, needed is personal. Primes still work for sure.
As an example which was at 139mm, if I had a fixed 300mm it would have put me back to far and the water would have been deeper to stand in to get the shot.

MIne is arriving on July 5... does anyone know if the RRS tripod/monopod foot from the EF 300 f2.8II fits this lens?
I don't know but I did order the leofoto EF 300 one to try (the only one is stock here that I can send back) as the one that comes with the lens is too big and no integrate plate. It should be here tomorrow.

Interesting comparison with the 100-500 and the sony 200-600. If you need 500+mm you might look at cheaper alternatives
Well worth watching .... His comparison the with the 2X attached makes me wonder if I would purchase it for birds.
The thing I saw in this one was a Canon rumours items that would be a stunner ... The teleconverter combining 0, 1.4X and 2X all in one!!!!! Sign me up!!!
^ from the photos I've seen posted so far, it seems the 100-300 is possibly not quite as smooth as a prime, but you of course gain other benefits. I'd guess the quality of the background bokeh is also affected by how images are processed. Bumping global contrast/texture/clarity will certainly also make for busier bokeh.

Ask RRS? Or buy from B&H and return if it doesn't?

I wonder if the 100-300 foot is interchangeable with the 200-400's because the 200-400 also included a 'short' foot with only 1/4" thread (though of course no Arca compatibility)? I immediately switched the standard foot for the short one and would certainly prefer it on the 100-300...

Are these shot at f2.8? Bokeh looks a little nervous on that vegetation.
Yes all 2.8 but it was a super dull day 5 min after it was raining so they are quite pushed in post….
You should also only look at 300mm if you compare with the prime but the only way would be a controlled side by side.
The horse showjumping pics that I posted were way less processed as it was good light.
