I wish they built a 1.4x TC that could be engaged just like on the 200-400mm but removable. To me that would be fantastic. No need to make the lenses longer and heavier when you do not TC's but can be put on if needed. To me that seems like actually better than built in.

I can't wait until you get yours because we all know we can trust your review with the 2x TC. A sharp 200-600 f/5.6 would be really nice, especially if it had one of your TC's that you could engage/disengage.
Just thinking about this lens and what does it mean for the 70-200 f2.8 and its future in my kit. I'm not a fan of the new RF design and I can see me grabbing the 100-300 most of the time.
Maybe I'll consider the 70-200 f4 for when I want a compact travel solution. It would be a nice compliment for the 24-105 f4.

This thing will be much bigger and heavier than the RF 70-200 2.8. I don't like the design either but it's a great lens optically, and it's great for travel.
The supply lately is crazy with all this high end glass. I sold my 200-400 also for this lens. I am first on the list at my dealer with a deposit but who knows if he will get one. I should know next week if they are getting one per a text he left me. Hopefully you will get yours.
I just heard from my dealer and he texted and they are getting my lens this week. Not sure which day yet but at least positive news. They got their shipping confirmation of it.

Great news...anxious to hear your feedback on performance with the 2x. It's almost a guarantee it will be razor sharp bare and with the 1.4x.

Yes the price is a bit of a gouge, like most new RF L lenses, but I'm a pro that shoots gymnastics and other sports for a living, and it will pay for itself quickly, who cares, you forget about the purchase price quickly once the income it produces rolls in.
I used the original Sigma 19 or so years ago when it was introduced and it was the biggest money earning lens I owned at the time, due to the specific focal range @ a constant f2.8, this will be light years better.
70-200 is too short, and the 200-400 is too long, so this will fill the gap nicely.
A switchable convertor like the 200-400 would have been an added bonus I suppose

Congrats. How are you getting yours? My dealer says he can't ship due to the embargo. I can't get it til after the 31st? I do not need it sooner so no biggie just curious how they get around the embargo.

I was surprised when I received the shipping notice. I didn't do anything special to get early access.
you guys are going to love the lens. I have the Nikon version and it is worth every penny. It is my go to lens for most sports... I am sure Canon did a great job with theirs, looking forward to hear what you guys think about the new lens.

Considering the Canon is 1.5lb lighter than the Nikon, I'm sure these guys are going to love it a lot. Although the Nikon is 2cm shorter.

that is for sure, luckily for me, I only use it to shoot sports and 80% of the time it is on a monopod..
If you are looking for one of these lenses I recommend Texas Media Systems. A lot of people say they will buy one if a dealer receives one but what will make a difference is if you place the order. Texas Media Systems has excellent customer service and can generally put their hands on new product pretty quickly. Terry Nixon is the sales rep that I work with.
Bokeh of foliage doesn’t look amazing but it’s alway a tricky one. Would be interesting to see how it compares to a 70-200 and the 300 prime. Did you had a chance to try it with teleconverters yet?
IME switching from the 400 & 600 primes to the 200-400, bokeh smoothness wasn't as good with the zoom, but there were other factors that made the zoom totally worth it, for me. I'm guessing the 100-300 will have its own set of pros and cons relative to the primes. To my eyes, the 100-300 background bokeh character appears to have a slight bright-ring effect in the OOF specular highlights. Perhaps a tradeoff for better sharpness/contrast in the plane of focus?
Imo they are all a bit too bright with some blown up areas so is hard to judge, not sure why he is exp compensating +0.3. I do agree that probably bokeh will not be as smooth as a fixed 300 2.8 but I take a zoom any day for sport or wildlife (I don't shot bird).
Having had for almost 10 years a 200-400 it was definitely not as smooth as a fix 400 (although 400 is 2.8 so not really a fair comparison)
I'm super curios to see how it perform with the 1.4x, if it is in the ballpark of the 200-400 at 400 F4 I would be super interested in this lens.
