It's disappointing that Sigma has not used better weather sealing in these I-series lenses. A rubber mount gasket alone just doesn't cut it for me. I understand hitting a price point. But they're exactly the same price as the little Sony 24/40/50 G lenses which have linear motors and full sealing. I hope Sony expands that compact lineup with something like the 17 and 90mm Sigma options.

True about the lack of full WS, but Sigma I Series now has 4 that are f2 apertures, where the Sony’s are all 2/3 or a full stop slower. The faster aperture is more important to me and I intend to take my Sigma I series 24 f2, 35 f2, 65 f2 and 90 f2.8 to Thailand for 2 months this summer and use during the Monsoon season. I will have a small Storm Jacket camera/lens cover to use as needed as my A7RIV is not the best weather sealed body either.

And Sony puts this footnote into the specs of the small G lenses. “ *Not guaranteed to be 100% dust and moisture proof. ” Which is probably their way to say that if the lens fails because of water intrusion they are not covered by the warranty.

Sure, all manufacturers include that sort of caveat. So when I fall out of a canoe with my camera I can't blame them for the lens not being "waterproof". I have no expectation of that. But those little G lenses have multiple barrel seals at all the likely points of ingress. So do most Tamron lenses and all the Sigma Art lenses.

The I-series lenses are providing a faster aperture in lieu of some other features. I appreciate that. Choices are good. I'd choose f/2.8 with better sealing over f/2 without sealing.

Enjoy Thailand!

A great addition to the I series. 17/4 was generally surprised by its size and a small mdf (12sm). It would have been a hit, but the sunstars are frankly shitty.

I don’t see the point of a ~200g 17/4 when the ~300g 16-35/4G exists.

f/4 is just too slow for a 17mm prime

If it were 10-12mm it would be more compelling at f/4

A tiny 17mm AF lens could be attractive to some if the performance is there. I could see pairing that with my 28-60 for the ultimate travel/hiking landscape combo. That's assuming I wanted AF, as my CV 15 has that "small & just in case I need to go wide" role currently.

Depends on what one shoots at 17mm. Many use wides for landscape and stop down for dof…so f4 is really not an obstacle at all.

I'm a pretty big fan of small, wide "just in case" lenses. I generally find 28mm wide enough, but I would grab my CV 21 f/3.5 just because it's so easy to pack.

Of course I picked up the Tamron 20-40mm and it's thrown my world into disarray. I really thought I was a "primes only guy".

For someone always shooting at the wide end of the zoom, then it may make more sense to go with the prime with roughly half the packed size, a significantly smaller filter size, a significantly closer MFD, and less than half the price, since the optical performance characteristics at 17mm appear to be roughly the same. I'm not saying you should be thrilled with it or sell your PZ in favor of it, just that it will make some strong arguments for some to purchase it over the zoom or to augment their kits with it for times when they don't want to pack the zoom.

I think the 17 looks good for what it is. I'd probably hold out for their first sale price if I were interested, or wait for an early adopter to let their copy go at a discount.

The 50/2 looks to be very comparable to their 35/2, and that's not a bad thing at all.

In the past I owned a 17/3.5 before picking up a 16-35/2.8L

When trying to “pack light” I would take the zoom, because taking primes means two lenses (17 + 35mm or 17+40mm)

Ultimately my experience is that the 17/3.5 was not a very useful lens when one owns a 16-35 too!

The target audience is probably someone who owns a 28-70 or 35-150 and is looking for a wider lens, but i think someone like this is still better served by a zoom like the 17-28, 16-28 or 16-35.

A prime would need to beat these zooms in either speed, sharpness or price to justify its existence, and I think it comes down to price for this 17/4 because it does not seem to beat the zooms in sharpness, and at f/4 it’s rather slow for a prime

The 17mm would be an instant buy for me. Already have several lenses that cover that range, but nothing that small and lightweight. Would be a great hiking lens. I’m not too worried about weather sealing. I’ll just put a rain jacket on the lens.

17mm , 35mm f2 and a small tele, will be a great hiking kit for me.

Hmm I suppose for this setup, using a single zoom would mean losing f/2 on the 35mm end

Always nice to see new additions to the I-Series. Sigma has been really committed to these and they are a nice match on my Sony A7C as well as on my Sigma fp. I have 24/3.5, 35/2, 45/2.8, 65/2, 90/2.8 in E-mount and 24/3.5, 35/2, 45/2.8 in L-mount too.

Not instantly planning to buy these 2 though as I rarely use ultra wide primes and I have the CV 15/4.5 in E-mount already + Sony PZ 16-35/4 G for travel, and I have a big pile of 50mm lenses (mostly adapted rangefinder lenses but also Sony 50/2.5 G and Sony Zeiss 50/1.4 Planar as native AF options).

I would love the see a 28/2 or 28/3.5 in the I-Series sometime in the future.

The Sony 16-35 PZ is very tempting for hiking and probably the best lens for that, but it is more expensive and I’m not sure how it would fit into my kit.
One thing that gives me pause about the 17mm sigma is the vignetting. 3 stops at f4 and just under 2 stops at f11. Hmm, have to think about that.

I own the Sony 20mm f1.8, so I probably don't need the 17, but it is so small and light and it would be nice on a gimbal, but focus breathing does appear to be an issue. I also don't understand why they don't make their aperture rings clickless? It would enlarge their target customer base. I may end up getting the Voigtlander 15 4.5, which does have that feature, but it is a lot heavier. Auto focus on a wide lens is not terribly important to me. The Voightlander does pass through the EXIF data, which is useful.

For travel I really like the f2 primes to use along side the small Sigma 16-28/2.8 and 28-70/2.8 DG DN Contemporary zooms that only weigh ~430 GM and still give you f2.8 from 16-70mm
