That looks similar to some short clips I recorded on SY85II. I'd say there is some hope left as SY is known to release multiple fw updates for their lenses...

The thing is much like Sony and such.. waiting for a fix(and not being able to return it after another few days) seems not worth it tbh. They might be able to fix it via firmware(does seem like it) but how long will it take and such which is the frustrating part to me. You would have thought they'd see these things easily if they just handed it to someone. I mean hell I'm not anywhere close to a high-end photographer or anything and noticed these things fairly quickly. Had it all fixed before release but sadly no ;-;

I ordered the Tamron today.. and requested Samyang give me a label to send it back. From what I've read Samyang appears to have put out some good ones but I guess mine was done by someone who hated their job or something. I don't know. It feels like Samyang could legit have something amazing if they tried 10% harder type of thing. Like just a little bit more QC after each iteration of construction of the lens though then the price would probably start coming closer and closer to Tamron tbh.

Got my Tamron yesterday.. took it for a walk with the wife, kids and my dad's dog. At least so far.. there isn't a contest just looking at the screen. Going to get them loaded up but the photos are dead on an crisp. Also locks on af so quickly. Digital parafocal is substantially better. I should of just spent the money. Got the Tamron for 1699$ brand new.

One last follow up.. had to do a birthday today with family pictures. All I can say it's damn.. the level of details.. if you get the Samyang just make sure you can return it if you get a bad one. (If it was really a bad one or just the quality I should of expected)But at this point it's a buy once cry once in the Tamron. I finally get to see the level of detail my a1s 50mp really can give.

Did you notice anything significant in the rendering between the two lenses? What about focal speed and tracking? Or is the main difference the quality control? I'm looking into a 35-150mm for family functions, and was contemplating buying from Sammy or Tamron. I have previous experience and preference for Sony lenses and Sigma.

The both Samyangs lens I had seemed soft to me. Like many of the pictures weren't in full focus even when the subject wasn't really moving. As far as auto focus the Samyang hunted a whole lot. The af itself was slow and if you had moving subjects coming at you then good luck. You're about to miss a whole lot of shots.

In contrast to the Tamron the level of detail captured is crazy. Some of the pictures taken yesterday was of an older gentleman and you can see basically every wrinkle, hair, and everything. It's kind of beautiful because it captures his elderly state in a way you generally just don't see looking at him. Yesterday my wife took a picture of me while I was walking with my father's dog. It was so in focus and you could zoom in on my sunglasses and see her taking the picture. The af is very fast/sharp and frankly I can see why everyone raves about it.

Digital parafocal works very well as well. Lens is tight and one of things no one asks but is super important is on the Tamron for focus and zoom are easy to use when the lens hood is not in use but attached. You can't lock the lens on the Samyang easily because the button is hidden partially behind the lens hood. The focal ring is obscured a little as well. The Tamron all buttons and rings are useable with the hood stored.

If you choose Tamron go to greentoe and make an offer. That is what I did though I found a "buy it now" link. I might of been able to offer less but I really needed the lens for a talent show coming up. I couldn't miss that..

If you choose Samyang you might get a good one. I honestly don't know but they took my lens back and refunded me same day. So they at least didn't give me any pain. The stress though is shipping it back and crap because Samyang says your responsible if something happens during return shipping really is something I didn't need.

Oh yeah one last thing.. this might just be me or something but I feel the Samyang uses more battery than the Tamron. Feel like it was draining rapidly.

Hpwdy y'all. This is my first post outside of the selling forum on FM. I've found this thread to be helpful and I think has saved me the trouble of ordering the Samyang and having to get rid of it. I recently sold my Tamron for several reasons, but mainly because I was worried it would go bad after seeing a Taylor Jackson video where he had to send his off because of a loose element and now the Tom C video where he has the same problem of a misaligned element. In the Taylor Jackson video, Taylor said he has a buddy with the same problem.

I was hoping the Samyang would make a nice replacement but now I don't think so. Has no one else reported issues with the Tamron "going bad" after a while?

I think the issue might also be that people expect GM build quality and ruggedness out of a lens that isn't first party or aimed at rough-life photographers. If you throw a lens around and then complain it breaks that might not be Tamron's fault.
I could be mistaken of course but I think most users here on the forum that have the Tamron are happy with it while most people that have the Samyang have been mostly disappointed with the product.

my older tamron's like the 28-75 and 17-50 went bad after a while, those were EF/EF-s lenses. Since the sony versions, have not had one of the latest ones go bad, had the tamron 35-150 since preorder, still use it on a weekly basis and it's fine, good as ever. It's massive, but did replace a whole lot of primes, so the simplicity has been nice and much appreciated.

Thank you both for the replies. I shoot a lot of events so I think I now know what I'll do if i get back into a lens with this range... ill prolly go tamron and I'll buy new with usa warranty. The reason i ditched my last one was because it was during the time they were impossible to get hold of so I finally just bought a gray market one from one of these NY stores... After seeing Taylor's video I was really worried it was gunna break on me with no way to get tamron to take it for repair.

Anyway thanks again.

I bought mine from greentoe.. I'd give an offer a try as it was a fantastic experience for me. They sell from authorized dealers only.

By the way guys I don't know is this is broadly known but there is a small trick to get the Samyang/Rokinon for around 1250 shipped.

1. Go to "buyrokinon.com" and add the lens to your cart (or any Rokinon lens for that matter).
2. Go through the checkout process all the way up to the point where you have just one more click to pay.
3. Do not finish the checkout process.
4. Usually within 24 hours you will get an email from Rokinon saying you left items in your cart. If you click the link it will take you to your cart and will enter the coupon code "WB" automatically (the code won't work if you don't get the email first).

Anyway the code gives you 10 percent off and then Rokinon does not charge you shipping or tax

It worked for me a couple of days ago.

Like i said this might already be common knowledge, but I didn't know so i thought i would post it here.

Thanks for sharing.

You can also go to Samyangus.com and add code "OFF10" to get 10% discount without going through all these steps on the Rokinon version of their site.

That's good to know. But also realize that the prices vary wildly between the two sites sometimes, so its always good to check both to get the best price and discount. Anyway just thought i'd share that.

Sonyalphablog seems to have gotten one of the better lenses with no sharpness and few focus issues - includes a lot of sample photos.
Unfortunately the one I was going to get was lost in transit (just my luck). If I get a decent sample on an amazon warehouse deal in the near future (some are already sitting at 1120€) I'll see how much autofocus can be adjusted via the lens station. Sometimes a bit of calibration can rescue the back/front focus issues on these Samyangs, if they are consistent. I had a 135mm that I was able to calibrate when initially it missed focus at about 3 meters. On the flipside, a 50mm Mark 2 I had would focus so far forwards at a common portrait distance, it was unsalvageable, as even maxing out the lens calibration slider did not fully compensate for the incorrect shift.

In term of AF both lenses offer similar performances in most situations but the Samyang has a few glitches : 2-5% of back focus at 100-150mm and loosing of AF when zooming in video

Yeah... so is AF glitchy or nigh unusable as already reported in this thread (photos) or on youtube (videos)
Also, sonyalphablog seemed to get a weaker copy of the Tamron judging by its scores compared to users comparisons here...

I doubt the AF is unusable, just not as good at keeping up with moving subjects and prone to missing the eye and instead focusing on fx the eyebrow (though if consistent, it can be corrected via the lens station in some cases). Of course, Youtubers will dramatize any small difference, otherwise there's no content.

Rather than going by individual reports, I'd suggest if you are looking for a baseline sharpness comparison to check the manufacturer's MTF charts ( Tamron and Samyang ) which do suggest that their performances ought to be quite similar, with the tamron resolving slightly better in the (outer) midframe (though I imagine one could not tell unless they were being compared with precisely the same composition side by side) at the shorter end while the results ought to be essentially indistinguishable on the long end.
Any minor decentering / sample variation will impact this, but on its face, the lenses should perform similarly enough when it comes to resolution to where this ought to not be a factor when deciding which lens to go for - a good sample of one will perform like a good sample of the other optically. Now how many samples are optimally put together is another matter entirely....

The guy is probably a Samyang fan.
In another video he ranked the Samyang 135 f1.8 above and beyond the Sony GM, Zeiss Batis and the Sigma 135.
Could be possible but may be healthy to be a bit skeptic.

Since I decided to buy a Tamron 35-150, I also investigated the Samyang version since it was receiving really good reviews by some Youtubers and barely anything bad was spoken of them, and they're $500 cheaper. But more investigation online found user experience with the Samyang vary quite a bit and some problems persist more than others. So maybe the Youtubers generally get free, factory provided good copies of the Samyang, so they're all good words for it?

I ended up just getting the Tamron instead of trying my luck with the Samyang to see if I get a good copy. Also Greentoe doesn't have the Samyang as of now, so the price difference is smaller than $500. So far happy with the Tamron 35-150 - loved the sharpness and the colors from the photos I took so far.

Mine just came in. Ordered from Amazon. I'll be taking it out on safari next week as a companion to my 500mm f/4. Will report back on how it does, and how the focal length works for game drives on a private reserve.
