The Short-eard Owl one of my favorite birds at this time of year, I wait all year for this time when the owls start making their appearances. I was fortunate this year and found a decent field where they were active mostly in the late afternoons. Not wanting to miss any action I got there plenty early in hopes that the owls would be out early on this morning. Well, I wasn't disappointed they were out and very active, but it was a 45 minute period of time in the early afternoon that proved to be the sweet time. One owl made numerous passes very close out in front and then dropped out of the sky like a rock and nabbed a vole. The show was on then, here's few of the shots I got during that sequence of actions.

Wow!! Fantastic series. Those yellow eyes sure stand out and you did a great job capturing them. Glad owls are on the job keeping rats in check.
I live in Lake Stevens and would love to see these guys. If you wouldn't mind a PM on location I'd appreciate it.
Thanks very much Jim, these were taken up North of Seattle, I'll PM you.

One question about shorted eared owl - does it appear more often at dawn or dusk? I tried a few times at dusk and didn't have much success. I wonder if morning time is better...
