Thanks Steve.

These were all part of a very wealthy clients extensive American automobile collection. 74 in all. He owned an old movie studio here in Chicago to store an photograph his collection in. The lighting was 4 4801 black line Speedotrons with 4 heads each in a 10ft X 30ft overhead soft box.

He hired me to shoot the collection and because of my schedule and some of the cars being loaned out to shows and museums it was a 4 year process and I still didn't get the entire collection photographed. After every couple of cars we had

This series is fantastic! Great work! A shame he passed away and never got to see it completed. I used to live in Lake Point Tower and in the parking garage there was a private garage with a large car collection, I always wanted to go in!

Thank you.

He was always adding to the collection so I doubt it would have ever been finished. I did produce a book for him right before he died. I have a copy and he had one.

Do you miss Chicago?

Wow what a wonderful opportunity for you. Your images are gorgeous. Congratulations!

Thank God for collectors large and small who preserve such special legacies.

Yes he was a wonderful client and most important an amazing man. He also owned several gilded age homes that he had completely restored. Here is one of his 4 summer homes. This one was in Lake Geneva.
This was taken with the 35 Lux FLEv1

This might sound weird, but as photographer enthusiasts were are almost conditioned, or at least expected, to like certain things, and I would argue that many of use know we are supposed to like Leica, and perhaps even more so the legendary "35'lux".

I see a lot of images I like captured with this lens, but I just went through images I've shot with the Summilux-M 35/1.4 over the years and realized how very few of MY favorite photos are captured with this lens. Actually none are! :-) I guess it is just not for me?

Needless to say, I no longer own this lens, but since it is an image thread, I'll throw in a mundane one taken during a California road trip back in 2017

Well, I like this last one, but that is more because of the subject ;-)

We are free to like whatever we like. Lotsa room to move around and a lot of choices out there. I don't much care for Sony or Fuji. Rangefinders like Leica M really fit the way I see and work. Never bonded with my digital Canons and had them for over a decade before I sold them and went all Leica M digital. But that's me. There are a lot of people that rangefinders are not the right fit. For them there is everything else out there. Nice to have choices.

Well, I can understand not liking the “legendary 35 ‘lux.” None of the Leica Summilux-M 35mm lenses have a rendering that seems to match that of my favored 50mm lens, the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH, the lens that lured me to add the Leica M system. At 35mm, I have tended to prefer the background blur of the Zeiss Distagon 35mm f/1.4 ZM, when I saw comparison images posted with any of the Leica Summilux images. I confirmed as much, last June, when I took my Distagon to a Leica dealer, and compared it to a Version II Summilux, made in the Sixties, and a demonstrator Summilux FLE I. It was almost immediately easy for me to dismiss the idea of buying a vintage Summilux 35. Human subjects, within the DOF, were different in character, when looking at FLE and Distagon images, with neither being “better” than other.

The large size of the Distagon does not normally bother me.

I did, however, acquire a Re-edition Steel Rim Classic Summilux, at the end of June, when Leica USA, in NJ, received stock. This was not a passionate grail quest, but a calculation. It is like-able enough, having both compactness and a wide maximum aperture. I can hope to learn to use its flare creatively, something I cannot do with the Distagon, or my CV Color Skopar 35mm f/2.5 II, which seem to be very modern lenses.

Wow, I did not realize how negative my “tone” was, when I typed the above post. The “busy” (to my eyes) background blur character of a Summilux FLE may not be nearly as wonderful as I would wish, but not all backgrounds are subject to this effect, and, as I said, subjects within the DOF of FLE images are “different” than Distagon images. If/When a well-preserved FLE I presents itself, when the time and place are just right, well, one can never have too many 35mm lenses, no?

I personally like the blur character of the FLE v1. Some like the color blue and some red. No right ot wrong here only what one prefers, Like I said it's great to have choices. I only have one 35 now becasue I found the one that works best for me.

The incredible colors, detail, and rendering of the Leica 35mm Summilux ASPH (pre fle) makes portrait images so easy and special for me. This casual, natural light portrait is of our local Renn Faire Queen.
