I had an opportunity to buy a 35/1.4 several times over the last 10-12 years at much more reasonable prices than now, but I was passed because I preferred the CY 35/1.4 images, while preferring the 80 Lux to the CY 85/1.4. But I always like the 35 Lux images—should have given it a whirl. And yes, I did just meander my way into a justification for another character lens

Just wondering, why did you opt for the Pre-FLE versus FLE?
Really subjective, IMO.. It seems to me to have an overall warmer (color temp wise) and softer rendering.. softer to me in the focus fall off, while still being very sharp on-center. This could be a result of the uncorrected focus shift (which the FLE corrects) manifesting itself as the focus fall-off I prefer.
I do miss the screw on hood of the FLE though, that was an awesome design change.

Did you find much of/any difference in contrast or sharpness? Especially off center? I have read that the FLE has higher contrast from coating updates and perhaps the optical adjustment across lenses. I owned the Pre-FLE twice, but a bit ago and shot mostly on a stock sensor. Can’t heads up compare to my FLE.

I don't think I've noticed much in the way of a contrast difference.. For some reason the pre-FLE does seem to produce slightly warmer images, so there probably is a coating difference in some way. I think the FLE is probably sharper across the frame until about f/5.6ish when you really can't tell a difference any longer.
The FLE takes some amazing images, but they are super sharp and very modern, IMO. The pre-FLE still has some of that 1990's/2000's not-quite-perfectly-corrected characteristic to it. Not as glowy / dreamy as the pre-ASPH (I quickly tired of that look, and my wife asking me why all our daughter's photos looked blurry), but still a bit less perfect than the FLE.
