Finally broke down and got my 600/4s TC.
Went out first day to try the lens and after half an hour, it started to rain all day long but got a few shots in anyhow.

Wow… I thought you weren't going to get the 600TC! How are you liking it compared to the 400TC?

I have been talking myself out of 600/4s TC for a long long time telling myself that 400/2.8s TC and 800PF are fine
But to be honest, 600 and 800mm are my most used focal length.
Weight wise, I can handle either 400 or 600 just fine. I sold my 800PF the same day I picked up my 600 but will keep
400/2.8s TC as there are still situations where 400 works well for me and f2.8 can still be an advantage. However I think I will
end up using 600TC more often than 400 in general.

More birds from the Rockpool and surrounds. A few of these are birds that I have photos of but not great shots. A few are also of birds that are reasonably common but are sometimes difficult to get because they stay in the tops of trees and thus do not offer decent quality poses etc. The White-naped Honeyeater is a first for me as it is not a common bird near me and again is often in the tops of (usually) tall eucalypt trees feeding on small insects, flowers and lerps - Lerps being a sugary cover of about 5mm diameter made by a Psyllid which is a sap sucking insect. Quite a number of Australian birds eat Lerps.

Since I bought 600/4s TC, every time I went out to photograph birds, 400/2.8s TC tended to be better suited at those locations but I got a few shots here and there with 600/4

I’ve made the mistake of checking this lens out at the rental department of my LCS along with all the other super teles. I asked if they have a new one in stock and ended up coming home with it.
For those who have this lens, what lens coat you have on it? I’ve been using Lenscoat on my previous super teles including the 600E. But the reviews on BH is 1 star(mainly due to the covered of the buttons on the lens). What other lens coat option I have for this lens.

I have the Z 600 TC but do not have a lens cover for it. I have used the Lenscoat products, and they are OK, but I have seen better finished types. Maybe one of these:

This is a really great set... I particularly like the composition and perching behavior in the last two photos.

Rolanpro is much better than Lenscoat.
I have both on my 400/2.8s TC. Good thing about Lenscoat is that they are very very fast at getting their product out. As soon as a new lens is released, they will have their product out within a month or less usually. Rolanpro is much much slower. So sometimes I ended up with Lenscoat because I don't like to take my expensive lens out without some kind of protection usually.
Then I ended up replacing Lenscoat with Rolanpro eventually. I also bought Rolanpro recently for my 600/4s TC and could not be happier.

Lenscoat does not stitch the edge of material so after a year or so, the edge may curl a bit. The piece that cover internal TC toggle is useless and I leave it out as it has a thick plastic cover over the toggle so you can see it but you cant really manipulate the toggle easily. Rolandpro has a cutout hole there which is much more convenient. Rolanpro also made small holes over all the buttons on the lens where as I have to cut holes on Lenscoat myself. The piece that go over focus rings and programmable ring on Rolanpro has tight cross stitched all over so it has different texture and you can feel and find
focus ring much much easier. Very thoughtful on Rolanpro's part.

Material wise, I have no complain from either. It is a bit more difficult to put Rolanpro on the lens. Probably because of all the stitches on the edge so it is less stretchy but you only need to do it only once.

Pheasant-tailed jacana. All shot @840mm. All images were cropped quite a bit. Shot with Z8.

Thanks Lance and Suteetat.
I’ve placed and received the Roland Pro lens cover for my 600mm F4 TCVRS. And the fit and quality is fantastic. I do like it better than the Lens coat I had for previous gens 600f4. We’ll see how it performs long term.
Need to spend some time with this sweet lens. I had the 600VR and 600E and the 800pf before this. This seems to be the forever lens for me atm.

Glad the Roland Pro worked out well, I am tossing up whether it is worth getting one as well. Interesting you had the Z 800 PF and have now got the Z 600 TC, which is also what I have done - with no regrets.

You should try the Roland Pro. It really covers the lens from head to toes and fitted well. Even the lens foot is covered.

I stopped going out to bird about 3 years after my second kid. It just wasn’t convenient. At the time, I just got the 800pf and had two previous gens of 600mm f4. Loved the 800pf but after the 600mm f4 TC was announced, I decided to sell it.
When I went to handle the 800pf again and the 600Z, it didn't feel that much different to me. Maybe I've been holding babies for too long The bulk of both lenses felt similar.

I mostly enjoy shooting song birds and small birds but I do like large birds from time to time and to practice with my BIF with tracking the bird. The built-in TC solves a lot of problem I had with the 600E and the 800pf. I don't like to use a tripod. I use a Black Rapid strap and handhold the lens so changing TC in the field is not feasible. I either walk out of the house with the TC attach to the 600E or not. This, however, can be a problem sometime depending on what shooting and the situation. I'm sure you've heard all this before by this time.

Here's the obligatory first shots from the 600Z

Z9, 600mm f4

Z9, 840mm f5.6. And here's the problem with 800mm+, I often clipped part of the big bird off when they're in flight. So it becomes a tight crop of the bird.

I've been wanting to photograph these Indigo Bunting for years. It has been one of the bird on my checklist for awhile. I heard it calling but spotting it was not easy since it's so small and it camouflage quite well with the dark green foliage. I stood there for a good 45mins to get these shots. I probably going to return tomorrow morning to see if I can get it in better light.
So far, I'm very happy with this lens. It really solves my issue with the 600E and the 800pf.

Thanks for the info and great shots! I may invest in one, where did you get yours from?

As you say, the bulk of the lenses are similar, just that the Z 600 is a little heavier, but not objectionably so. Having that TC switchable is a Godsend!

Amazon with next day delivery. I chose the in stock pattern with Prime delivery as shooting with these superteles just doesn’t feel right without the camo.

I need to go back with a 2x TC and see how the lens performs.
