My friend Vinnie and I did a shoot a couple of nights ago so I could experiment a little bit in a larger studio space than I'm normally able to use. He brought his favorite jacket and hat, and I really like how these two shots turned out. I'm starting to like my 50mm lens a lot more for close-in portraits. I know it's wider than what's typically considered a "correct" focal length for portraits in the headshot range but I think the distortion adds some character.
Nice! Good focus control.
Observation - a head tilted up is read by many as "haughty" or arrogant (aka stuck up).
Unless of course that's what you were going for.
Nitpick: #2 could have used a hair light. Nevertheless good separation from the background and a well done vignette.
I love hats Daniel! Both on men and women!
Your 1st image is great! He wears it well and I do not see any problems.
His "attitude" renders both images well and you did a superb job IMHO!
I don't think there is a lens made that you could not take a wonderful portrait with!

Thank you Jon.
I appreciate you taking the time to share your constructive critiques. I personally see a head tilted up as proud, confident, statuesque, and in this portrait of my friend also a little cheeky. All of those attributes showcase what I love about Vinnie's personality. I also very often direct my models to raise their head/chin because I like what it does for the jawline.
I did use a hair light in #2, but I chose to keep it subdued because when I increased it's power it also created highlights on the leather that were too bright for my liking.

Thanks so much Dan! I agree with you about his attitude, and the attitude being expressed is one of the main reasons these two shots stood out to me. I see a lot of confidence, and I especially love that aspect of these portraits because the model is someone that I admire deeply.

1st one looks like there's a great story behind it! Really well done.
Thank you. Honestly every time I photograph Vinnie I think the photos get better, and this set is nice because we were really getting into our stride as collaborators and friends. He's by far my favorite person to photograph and I hope my photos of him show that.
