Same results for me Rusty.

Leica's approach was to provide the exact same original hood as a replacement. I'm not sure what to make of this decision. Makes no sense! I was afraid of this as both hood designs look and measure the same.

I just tested the new hood with a B+W filter, which is considerably thinner than Leica's filters, and unfortunately, the strong/hard vignetting issue remains. The outcome is indistinguishable from when using the previous hood. It seems like they haven't addressed the problem at all! Quite amusing, to be honest.

Would Leica typically "replace" or redesign a part and keep the same part #?

Leica had to screw up here. No way you send that letter out with an identical hood. BAHAHAHA. I am framing that letter with the hood. Maybe it will be worth something in 50 years. I have two identical hoods so why not

What is happening?! Maybe they sent the old hood out to everyone on accident? This makes no sense.

Considering Leica's acknowledgment of the problem with the initial hood and their commitment to redesign it, it seems reasonable to conclude that an error has occurred. It is perplexing that it took them 5 months to rework the hood only to send a replacement spare of the original hood to previous owners. It is crucial to act quickly and stop the delivery of the replacement hood. Customers need to be given a clear explanation of what went wrong.

Here is the response I received from Leica 5 months ago:

Well, interesting, and, yes, as Fred said, amusing. I did not get home today, in time to meet the UPS driver, so, I will not see my 21st Century Steel Rim until Monday. Sigh.

Good news is the lens is bad ass. Also good news is that the lens in the box will be the new and improved identical lens hood

Seriously though the lens is great, I will just use hood less for now with a filter.

I just emailed Leica support and the customer reps that reached out to me. Lets see what happens

I will send them an email as well because this looks like a mistake.

I received word from the director of customer care, who informed me that they are currently working diligently to determine what happened here. The factory has been alerted about the issue, and we can expect to receive a response on Monday. From my perspective, it appears to be a clear mistake, and there is a possibility that we may eventually receive the reworked hood.

Probably a strange request but to sidetrack from this hood debacle, does anyone have both the SR Reissue and a Leica (or LLL) 8 element?

I’m curious how they compare at f2.

The the sneaky UPS driver did not knock, even though an adult signature was required. Fortunately, I was monitoring the movements of the big brown truck, via the UPS site, refreshing the page every few minutes, so, if there were any porch pirates shadowing the truck, I beat them to the package.

First impressions are good. The aperture ring is not wobbly. The replica OLLUX hood is not wobbly, and it is quite attractive in appearance. Images shot under the tremendously bright Texas sun, at ISO 200, and f/5.6, appear to be quite sharp, within the limitations of the LCD screen. I have to be at a plumbing store within an hour, so, will have to set the new lens aside, for a few hours. I had not yet installed the newest firmware, to read the 6-bit code, either, so will have to do that this evening, and then shoot some wide-open images.

Congratulations on getting the SR! It seems that the first batch had some problems. When I got the lens early on, I had issues with the focusing ring being difficult to turn towards infinity and the aperture ring being wobbly. It also had a problem with back-focusing. However, when I got a second copy, it was excellent and didn't have any of these issues. So, I think Leica probably tighten QC after receiving feedback.

I had both lenses but never compared them side by side. The 8-Element has higher field curvature for sure!

That's interesting. My copy had both these issues. The focusing one was the dealbreaker for me. I just thought it was inherent to the design. I wonder if a new copy could be worth trying. @RexGig0 how's the focusing ring stiffness is on your copy?

This is my first Leica lens purchased as a new item, rather than pre-owned, so, I do not know what would be a normal amount of stiffness, for a factory-fresh lens. It is certainly well-damped, but falls within I would think to be normal.

This is comical at this point. On the other forum someone reported from Wetzlar that they are nowhere near finished for a redesigned hood. I don’t know how this kind of miscommunication can occur.

I just got this email from Leica this morning:

===============

Good morning, Mr. Miranda,

We just received our 2nd shipment of these hoods. This batch is correct! We are shipping your new hood out today. Please accept my apologies for the confusion.

Kind regards

===============

Therefore, the initial shipment mistakenly contained the wrong item, which had the same hood as the original product. Based on my understanding, Leica has acknowledged the error and intends to send the appropriately redesigned hood to previous 35/1.4 Steel Rim owners.

Good news, the mystical re-designed hood exists!
