p.3 #1 · Upgrade from 90D to R7 or R10?

Jeff, thanks for the excellent insights. I particularly like your point about watching wildlife through the OVF, waiting for the right moment to take a shot. This is really one of the pleasures of photography, which I don't think will feel the same through an EVF. Anyway, I have ordered an R10. Cant hurt to give it a try!

Really? Where do you two get these ideas from?

I can watch wlldlife through the EVF (along with correct exposure) just like I can with an OVF. On top of that, I can do so in RAW Burst mode with my R7, taking a video clip from which I can then select and save any of the frames from that clip.

I didn't say you couldn't do it. I just said it would feel different, like watching something on TV vs through a glass window. I'm sure it's less of an issue on high-res EVFs (R5/R6), but the R7/R10 EVF is pretty low res (2.3M dots) by today's standards. Anyway, this is more of a personal preference thing. Not meant to be controversial.

The 2.36M dot resolution of the R7 is a little low but not obvious to me unless shooting in tandem with my EOS R (3.6M dot EVF). In decent light, the R7 EVF doesn't feel much different than the optical VF of the 90D. The optical simulation is actually very good. However, the EVF is a lot nicer than the 90D VF as light gets dimmer as details are clean and fully visible whereas the 90D VF looks dad burn murky in twilight.

I find the R7's EVF better than I expected, better than the M6II add-on EVF which has the same specs. I still personally prefer looking through an optical viewfinder, but the R7's EVF gets the job done and I did not intend to imply otherwise. The EVF can display info the OVF cannot.

I'll be interested in your opinion of the R10 with lenses like the 70-300 L. I initially viewed the R7 as an upgrade to my M6II since I didn't like using the M with lenses larger than the 70-300 II and really preferred the 55-250 ergonomically. It didn't replace my 80D and I bought the 90D based on the M's 32 MP sensor performance. I have now sold my M kit. The R7 with native 100-400 is lighter than the M6II, EVF, adapter, and 70-300 II.

I suspect you'll soon have the native 100-400 for your R10. If you are going to get a kit lens definitely go for the 18-150. It, at least says f5.6 or better up to 60 mm. That would make a nice light two lens kit. The R10 has a panorama builder which can supplement wide angles. I use that all the time on my G1X3 and now R7. Enjoy.

I ordered the R10 with 18-45mm kit lens. I understand it's a pretty crappy lens, but worth the $120. I also bought a "like new" 18-150mm on ebay for $260, and a new 100-400mm from B&H for $499 (Cannon has a $150 rebate on it right now). I also got the EF adapter so I can use my EFS 10-22 and EF 70-300L. I will report back once I have some first hand experience on the 90D vs R10 topic!

I'll throw in my two cents here. I switched to mirrorless (though panasonic). I found no problems with video and honestly mirrorless is the way to go for video. Completely different ballgame when it comes to photo. I simply cannot shoot through an EVF, tried - failed, gave up. There is something to do with muscle memory or I am an old dog.

Have to try for yourself.

Has anyone had an issue with the button redesign on the R7? I was a 7D MK II shooter and was hoping the R7 was the replacement but sadly, it is not. It does seem to be the replacement for the 90D which, wanting to continue in that vertical, that would be the logical next step. Shooting a lot of sports, mostly kids, I knew for myself that the button redesign would drive me nuts, so after much consternation and wanting to move to full frame, I upgraded to the R6 a few months ago. I have no regrets other than Canon is now rumored to be releasing an R6 MK II but that's a discussion for another day. Good luck with the decision. Making the move to mirrorless, you can't go wrong. The technical upgrades are a blessing and a curse but fun to learn.

There isn't much of a "button redesign", really. Just a shift in the location of the rear Quick Control Dial. Honestly, on the R7 this dial falls more naturally under your thumb when holding the camera than does the traditional (rather smallish) QCD on the R6. If found it very easy to get used to this control layout when I was evaluating the R7.

I was a 7D MK II shooter and was hoping the R7 was the replacement but sadly, it is not. It does seem to be the replacement for the 90D which, wanting to continue in that vertical, that would be the logical next step.

To wax a bit hyperbolic, the R7 destroys the 7D Mark II in every performance and image quality metric.

It's also a well-built camera, if not tank-like as was the 7D series. (It's put together about as well as the R6, in my estimation.) The only significant loss vs. the 7D Mark II is the lack of a vertical grip option. This could be a deal breaker for some.

In terms of aspiration, I would say that this camera falls somewhere between the 90D and 7D2. Canon will likely never introduce a "pro" level APS-C camera again, so this is the best we are going to get, at least until the R7 Mark II.

Nope. I got used to it quickly and have grown to like it. The button placement seems natural and I can find the ones I use without removing my eye from the viewfinder. I can find the compensation dial with less motion and it doesn't interfere with the joy stick. Being my first R, I like the button customization. The ISO button is in a useable location and I really like the instant video button too. Easier for me than typing on a cell phone.

My new R10 finally arrived. So far, it's everything I hoped for. Basically the same size and weight as my SL2, but with amazing autofocus and a compact/light kit lens with significantly more reach. Other than the slightly lower resolution sensor, it also seems better than the 90D in almost every way that matters to me.

The one thing that annoys me about canon is that they keep changing the positions of buttons on every new camera. Why? I also miss the way the +/- magnify buttons worked. Now you have to hit the magnify button and then turn the wheel to zoom in/out. I guess I'll get used to it...

Anyway, I'll report back in a few days once I've had more time to play with it. However, the R10 seems like a great travel camera so far.

So glad you got one too as it´s a Gem!

The positions of the buttons and way of making changes are an annoyance only if you got different bodies. I do...

Congrats on the new toy! You're going to love it I'm sure.

As for the zooming thing. Unless they gimped the UI on the R10 from the UI on all their other bodies such as the R5/6, you just use the screen like you do on your cell phone to zoom in and move around on the screen when reviewing your images. That's just one of the many things Canon has really nailed on their cameras. I think the touch screen interface on Canon bodies is one of the most underrated and appreciated features.

I normally use magnify to quickly check the focus of a shot. It turns out that on the R10 you can customize the magnify button so it zooms directly into the focus point at 100%. One-click! Works great!
