I do have the 16-35PZ as well but I see this as a different use case for me. Family walk around where I don't really need 16mm, but would like faster than f/4. The 16-35 is my landscape lens.

Sharp and fast. It’s just a pleasure taking pics with it

I just miss the 16mm of the pz…

Did you sell the pz with the intention of replacing it with the Tamron?

Yes I did.
I want to be clear. The tamron is such a great lens. Ok it doesn’t have internal zoom and it’s longer at 20mm but appart from that I just can’t find anything bad about it.
It’s fast, uber sharp and mfd is just crazy.

The pz on the sony was not as fast as I needed for casual/street photography and it was a pita not saving the latest zoom position but…

They’re so similar and so different at the same time
Damn gas

That's strange. My PZ does remember the last focal length when powering back on.
Are you sure yours didn't do that?

I still can't decide if I'll keep my PZ.
I bought it and sold my 16-35mm GM but I don't know if I'm going to miss the f2.8. I also don't know if over the long term, PZ will work for me (I don't do video). I'm taking it with me to Amsterdam this week so I'll see how much use it gets.

I dont use the power zoom much as it's not something im used to using but it's there. I never shoot video so in a sense it's a waste to have the PZ but that does not bother me. I decide last minute to pair a Samyang 75 with it instead of the Sigma 65mm at least for this upcoming trip. There is zoom ring that I dod use

The Samyang 75/1.8 seems pretty nice. Although for a longer prime I'd personally perhaps even go with something longer for a set with the 20-40/2.8, say an 85mm or a 90mm. 75mm feels a bit too close still to 40mm, some more magnification or tighter framing would make more difference I guess.

Sorry for bumping this thread
I want to make a little update about the Tammy 20-40

We spent a few days in the north of spain (a little dark these months) and now I am clear about some points:

1. I don't need a wider lens. The distortion I'm getting with the 20mm is enough for me.
2. 40mm was too short for me in a lot of moments.
3. I don't feel 2.8 mandatory

Conclusions:
16-35 was a dream lens for me (ultra sharp, tiny, awesome construction) but in real world I don't need those 16mm.
Knowing that I don't need that 16mm I think I would need something longer than the 40mm.
I've had a tammy 28-75 for a while and I felt those 28mm really long so...
Maybe that new sony 20-70

Makes sense to me. I’m considering replacing my 17-28 & 28-75 Tamron lenses with the 20-70 for basically the same reason. I always stop down a little to get the DoF I want, so f/2.8 is very rarely used. When I’m shooting a zoom, I don’t want to change lenses, so my 17-28 rarely gets used. I’ll shoot more wide angle shots in these situations if I don’t have to change lenses. Plus it takes up less room and weight in my bag, so I can add a fast prime for low light, which works much better than an f/2.8 zoom. We all have different shooting styles and kit preferences but I think the Sony 20-70 will be better for me.

I agree with you.
And all around lens and a prime in the middle (50mm maybe?)

The 20-70/4 looks like a great option.

For me, the 24-70GM II plus the 20/1.8G work better. I find that I rarely go wider than 24mm so I can leave the zoom on the camera 90% of the time and have full time f2.8. For the other 10% the 20/1.8 is absolutely killer and also fast. These two lenses are obviously much more expensive than the 20-70/4! Just a thought.

I think it's pretty wonderful to have that kind of doubts with so many great lens options out there.

I usually shoot between 15mm and 40mm but having the Tamron 28-75/2.8 made me enjoy being able to have that extra reach an being a 2.8 it's pretty versatile.

I find it to be a rather long lens though and I do get self conscious about shooting larger/longer lenses.

Tried the 16-35/4 from Sony and enjoyed it a lot but being f4 at night became an issue, considering that I favour a lens that I can shoot in any situation.

the 20-40/2.8 has been a pretty good balance between focal lengths I use the most being fast enough while not being a large nor heavy lens, which is great - it balances quite nicely on the A7C, for instance. But at times I did feel that as a zoom lens it felt too short - nothing that made me miss any photos though.

The 20-70/4 seems like a good package, but I think to me it would fall on the same issue I had with the 16-35/4 when in low light, also it extends considerably when zooming so it attracts a bit of attention.

This does seem like a really great range when paired with my Tamron 35-150 on the a1. It's on my short list!

Got this lens last week, so far I really like it, but I haven't been able to put it to use much yet.

Spending a few weeks in Bangkok, Thailand before the wife and I head south for a month to some wonderful beaches. Here are photos with the 20-40 and I feel it did a great job with these, very happy with the results. 1st photo is the upper level exterior of a fantastic new shopping experience called IconSiam, it is on the riverfront in downtown Bangkok. And no, there is no distortion in the photo, that is how the building is designed, there isn't a straight, level surface almost anywhere!

2nd and 3rd Photo is Apple Store at 20mm and then 40mm.

Here are a couple photos taken from the garden deck in front of the Apple Store shown in the above post. These are looking back East across the river at the Silom district of Bangkok. 3rd shot is a photo taken near dusk from our 26th floor room patio at one of the hotels on the other side of the river.
