Have to say I've been really liking the look of this lens, particularly for its size and weight (and price) which are pretty big factors for me.
Wondering what people think in the comparison between this and the tamron/sigma 28-70 lenses?
Obviously it covers a different range, but there's a big overlap, and in both cases you'll likely need a prime to go with it, so it would be (in my case) something like...
20-40 + a 65/2 or 75/1.8
or
20mm or 24mm prime (not sure which one specifically) + the 28-70 sigma (or the tamron, either way)
I think it just depends on what you like. For me the 20-40 is perfect because I don't like anything wider than 20. I think 20 still looks natural. I'll stich 2 together if I really need wider. Again it really comes down to individual taste. I just re purchased the 45 and 75 1.8 again to pair with the 20-40. 45 is redundant but it weighs nothing and would be better in many low light scenarios I like to shoot in. They both are so good, light and small. Very easy carry. Others might go the 24/28-70 route and then add a wider lens. Really no wrong answer.

Interesting to see you guys on the same thought path as me. I bought the SY 75/1.8 during their black friday sale just to pair with this lens. I think it's going to be a great combination. I already have the 45/1.8 so that may get into the kit as well, it's a fantastic lens and weighs almost nothing. I thought about the Sigma, but I like the looks, price and weight of the SY better.
Unfortunately mine showed up defective, so it's back to them for a warranty replacement now They are incredible lenses, when you get a working copy!

I was watching this comparison to the PZ 16-35/4 this morning. The video is mostly videographer-centric, but still gives a decent comparison.
I'm starting to contemplate this lens more and more Also because I don't usually shoot superwide, might even sell the Voigtlander 15 to finance it; since that doesn't leave the house much.

A few shots from my morning walk today. I'm still happy with this lens paired with the Sony 85mmf1.8 for a light walk about kit. The 20-40 is good for most things but I prefer the 85 for photos of people.

If I had a Scrooge McDuck room full of gold coins I'd want to try pairing this with the Sigma 90mm for a more compact option, but since I have no such room the Sony 85mm is a good companion.
Undecided where my Tamron 28-200 sits in my kit since picking this lens up.

well after reading and looking through all the generously posted sample pics I got pulled in and ordered one yesterday. Excited to try this lens out for travel and to chase my 4yr old and his friends around. I did get a 24-70 GMII for my birthday so will have to see how the Tamron fits in for travel and daily usage.

I leave mine on my A7C pretty much all the time... as a small daily walkaround.

Switchers from Tamron 17-28 or Sony 16-35 (or perhaps a Sigma 16-28), what's your verdict? Do you find that you miss those few mm at the wide end or has the longer tele end outweighed the loss?
Though the 16-28 serves me well, I'm looking hard at my portfolio and can see that for casual snapshots I probably overuse the 16/17mm end and could make do with 20mm - and could definitely use 40mm (28mm in APS-C crop is usable but the OOF rendering leaves much to be desired, and makes all the measurebating about the 20-40's bokeh somewhat moot...). For landscapes however I am using 16-19mm a lot so I'm torn..

I've been using the 20-40mm pretty much since its release and it has become my favorite zoom. I often take it out on the a7c with the Batis 85/1.8 on the a7iv...a fairly light kit covering 20/35/85. It also pairs well and I like using it with Tamron 70-180/2.8, Tamron 28-200, and Tamron 70-300 all using 67mm filters.
I also got the Sigma 16-28/2.8 recently largely because its brother the Sigma 28-70/2.8 is so amazingly good and because sometimes I need a little more wide. I like using the Sigma with the 35 and 50 APO-Lanthars or also with the Batis.
The 20-40 can do some nice close-ups of flora with its 6.7" close focus distance...a feature that I like using.
I have an aversion to heavy lenses. I only own two above 600g, the 24-105/4 and the Tamron 70-180/2.8 because they are so versatile and useful. What I love about the 20-40 is its light weight, f2.8, and size. I can carry it all day long or hiking with ease.

Can anyone please provide an ARW file from 20mm to check distortion correction (correction profile shall be embeded in raw metadata like with native lens)? I use C1 Pro and checked dng converted (from another forum) and there is no profile embeded;-(

about a week ago, I was scrambling for my 16-35 pz for a helicopter trip, I knew I wanted to get photos of the scenery as well as reactions. I didnt want to risk not wide enough scenarios, I could not find the lens on time
Stuck with the 20-40, was more than wide enough, had to zoom in multiple times.
still have the 17-28 and 16-35pz, will likely sell sometime this year.... I REALLY like the 16-35pz, just not sure if I can justify keeping it around
some screen grabs with the 20-40, I do mostly video these days

Has anyone else felt autofocus in AF-S mode to be considerably slower than in AF-C? I only shoot in AF-S, either center area or spot S size. It's blazing fast on AF-C, but it's not really how I shoot, so quite a bummer.
Already updated to the latest firmware on both the lens and the A7iii. The Sony FE 20/1.8 and the FE 35/1.8 are much faster than the Tamron in the same conditions.
Overall I'm quite enjoying the lens (bougth it early January during a trip in which pretty much only used this lens) but this AF speed has being an annoyance point... I also feel that using the EVF the AF speed seems to be a bit faster than when using the LCD. Not sure if it's a user issue, some setting I've missed... but I assumed it would be on par with the two Sony lenses mentioned above as all reviews point out that the Tamron has a pretty fast AF speed.

worth keeping an eye on the upcoming FE 20-70/4 that Sony is about to launch. seems to be quite an amazing lens, although I usually shoot within the 15-21-40 range at times I did feel that having a bit more reach would be beneficial. now, if that would be more interesting than having f2.8, it's something to think about. I thought about getting an 85/1.8 to complement the 20-40/2.8 but that lens would basically cover that.

I had a chance to explore an old school under renovation yesterday. Here's a quick edit from the Tamron 20-40. It was my first time shooting mostly on a tripod with this lens. I'm pretty happy with the lens still. I did some perspective correction on this one.
