Considering that the last soccer game I photographed was a good 40 years ago, back then with a Canon New F-1 + FD 200/2.8 + 2x converter, I'm happy with the result.
The nice thing about the test match was that even as an amateur photographer without a press pass, you could get relatively close to the baseline area, so that I was able to capture low perspectives close to the grass, that would not be possible from the spectator area.
The few press photographers who were there were all still using DSLRs and mostly Canon + 400/2.8.
I've been using the 180-600 so much that I had forgotten what a joy it is to shoot with the more compact & lightweight 400. A couple more hummingbird photos...
