These look really nice. What AF mode did you settle on for this subject?
Yesterday I got pretty frustrated with all the AF modes. Today I went back and sort of figured some things out. Not sure why today worked better as I didn't really do anything that different but I had more success today.
So today I was using the Wide Area AF Large and I also made a custom Wide Area that was a little bigger than Large which I used some of the time. I did some Wide Area handing off to Auto-AF which was hit and miss. I also tried handing off to 3D but that was hopeless. I did a little bit of Auto-AF on its own which sometimes worked but not the greatest.
Yup... what the two posts before me said...
I think if I managed to make that shot of a swallow picking an insect from a reflecting pool (image 3), I'd have put my camera away and gone home. That photo sizzles like few others!
While you may feel like you're still learning how to use the Z9, it appears as if it is working just fine for you.
What are your thoughts about the 400 f4.5... do you agree that it is pretty amazing considering its relatively low price? While not quite a 400 f2.8, to me it seems closer to that benchmark than it should be.
I know somebody with this same exact combo that thinks the camera and lens is horrible at birding and fast action. He clearly does not know what he's doing or how to use the camera. I should really send him your info for some lessons on how to shoot small birds in flight and in action. arbitrage wrote:

You are spot on with the custom wide area that is larger than "large area". I shot swallows for the first time with my Z9 / 800 6.3 while I was out west a week ago and it was really good . That has been my go to from the get go for birds in flight. With the latest firmware it is better than ever. I tried auto and it worked sometimes but not as good as the custom large area.
