The 100-500 focuses quite close for a long lens. Hummers brains are keyed to yellow/orange/red colors. It's not hard. Sometimes they sit or crap on your lens hood.

They're very curious. And territorial. I've had them land on my shoulder while I was trying to photograph them. As if, "Can you show me what you are doing?"
I've had them land on me at a Costa Rican lodge where they had feeders out and the hummers were used to people. Here in SoCal they are not so outgoing.
This guy literally landed on top of my bird feeder and was staring it down to see if something will materialize. Something was screaming from the bush below, not sure what.
