Good stuff, all. I've been so busy photographing canine sports events the last year or so that I've hardly been about to get out form some peaceful wildlife time. I was able to sneak out to the lake for a couple hours Friday AM.
If anyone is still waiting on or is looking for an 800PF, I talked to a buddy at Precision Camera in Austin, TX and they currently have three (3) 800PF's available. They are great peeps with top-tier customer service! https://www.precision-camera.com/

Posted this over on the Sports board..
"....Finally had a mid-afternoon game to try the Nikkor 800mm PF lens out and it's definitely a niche-type of lens. Really need the players deep on the opposite of the field to really track the action.
Anyways - a fun a little outing and if you like to shoot tight on one subject and in good lighting...give this beast a try."
A few extra shots to show case the capabilities of this lens for field sports in well...obviously good light.

Wow! Incredible shots and was I'm sure a great experience to be able to document these treasures in your park!
Thanks. The spotted owlet is pretty well adapted to many parks in the city here and I have at least 7 of these within
15 minutes walk from my apartment. Too bad, I missed a chance when the usual group of 5 were
mating each other about 2 weeks ago. A friend who walked in the park almost daily caught the action one evening while
I was lounging on my couch

Bryde's whales, I had 800PF, 400/2.8 TC and 24-200 ready just because you never knew where the whales are going to come up. Today is 800PF day though.

You get some pretty amazing diversity where you live!
Nice work.

Hey Bruce, thank you! yes this place has lots of species in fact a year ago I think Huntington Beach State Park was #41 on the e-bird list of top spots by number of different species sightings each year. I'm happy we chose this spot to retire and relax!!

A lot of fun with Z9 fw 4.1 and 800PF today. Some cropping in every pictures. All shots in
auto area+bird detection.
The last picture, I am actually surprise that Z9 actually managed to find the bird with
auto area, bird detection mode. I doubt I would be able to get the bird with single point focus
even as there were lots of grass in front.
Now I pretty much feel like the limiting factor is me and not the camera.

Probably should have used something shorter but I love the rendering from this lens in soft light. Some closeups and some in-flight images, all uncropped, of Australasian Gannets - nest building season!

All wonderful but that first one is spectacular!
Thank you...
If the sky is right, sunsets at Crex Meadows can be absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, the crane migration is a bit late and I didn't see the giant flocks that I hoped to have seen on that evening.
