It's been a fun summer using the Z 9 + Z 800mm rig from the kayak here in BC's central interior.
After processing with Camera Raw, I ran all of these through TOPAZ Gigapixel, DeNoise, and Sharpen - some to a greater extent than others. All are cropped for taste to the 19:10 format.
The crazy elusive Sora @ f/8, 1/1000, ISO 2200

At the southern extremity of Auckland's Hauraki Gulf lies the Firth of Thames. To the firth's east, lie the volcanic ridges of the Coromandel Peninsula. To the west, a narrow coastal plain comprised entirely of ancient cheniers. As winter gives way to spring, thousands of migratory shorebirds arrive from as far afield as Alaska and others depart for their own breeding grounds in other parts of New Zealand. Amongst the departures is the extraordinary little Wrybill. It is the only bird in the world with a laterally curved bill (always to the right!). It breeds only in the braided rivers of the South Island over summer where it uses its bent bill to reach insect larvae under rounded riverbed stones. I visited earlier this week and there were still a few Wrybill: (some of these were with the 1.4x attached and the ones taken in the morning suffer from atmospheric conditions)

Your work, as always, is outstanding. In addition, I really appreciate the bio-geographic profile of this species... a shorebird that is new to me.
cheers,
bruce

Great shots, Alistair!
Thanks very much Lance, most kind of you. I must admit the 800 is a game changer for this type of work. Being able to crawl about, hand-held shooting at subject eye-level and get rock steady 8k video and images at 1140mm!!

If you bred them in the Northern Hemisphere, would their bills curve to the left?

Just two from me - life has recently stopped me from having a lot of free time. A lot of photos of my toddler - but those are not with 800mm lens and not posted publicly.
