Took this lens for its first spin yesterday. This lens will need some getting used to from my perspective. It seems to be very sensitive to atmospheric conditions. This sensitivity seems to be more than just down to focal length but very hard to tell from just one outing. But I cannot recall my old 600/4+1.4 being quite so sensitive. But I must stress that this was only one day's usage and it will take much more usage to draw any conclusions! Does anyone have any insights in this regard?
At 2 different locations in different conditions, the issue was not there. But what was there are those beautiful colour, transitions and sharpness of other Z lenses. Just beautiful.
I also found handling to be very nice. The weight is centred over the lens foot and balance is pretty much perfect on the Z9. AF appears to be excellent and the VR nothing short of extraordinary. No trouble hand holding all day. I will probably remove the lens foot and leave it off, as I have done on the 400/4.5.
Anyway, to some images. The first 2 are at the location where the atmospherics were contriving against sharp images:

Hi Luke,
Just curious if the Rufous Hummingbird pic in the set above is cropped at all? Still a great pic, just wondering about MFD for this lens and how it works with hummers :-).

A quick picture from my trip to Torres del Paine, Chile.
f6.3, 1/50s, iso 5600, handheld. Early morning, we were walking toward a site where a family of pumas
were eating and guarding their kill. I thought by the time we got to the site and for the puma to wake up, f6.3 would not be a problem. However, just as we started walking from our car, one puma happened to walk to a water hole near the road. I was not expecting to see one so soon otherwise I would use 400/2.8S instead but since i had 800PF on my Z9 so that I used. Rather surprise that 1/50s handheld still gave resonable result. I also tried the new noise reduction in PS.

A surprise with this lens is how good the AF is. Seems to be very accurate and sticky, more so perhaps than the 400/4.5 or perhaps it is down to the narrower FOV. Either way, I'm not complaining. This lens is shaping up to be quite the keeper!

Awesome shots and agree it's a keeper for sure! I'll say it again, the Z9 & 800pf is like the D500 & 500pf on steroids!

A 2.5 hour road trip to Canberra to chase some Scarlet Robins and Rose Robins that are a little thin on the ground here in Sydney. It was very successful and very enjoyable.

Hi Lance
I wonder if that last bird realizes that it is a spectacle (the head adornment).
The uniqueness of "The Land from Downunder" leaves an impression with so many of us in the northern hemisphere. I'm still in awe that when we have spring, Australia is into fall.
