Your story is fascinating, from the beginning (launch of the Z9) I have literally been stumped by how many people report that they like the Z9 form factor, and especially weight, with big lenses, while at the same time jubilating about the lighter form factor of the new and modern Nikon Z super telelenses, saying how glad they are Nikon shed some weight on these monsters.
I find that rather schizofrenic, and can only explain it with the fact that Nikon gives their users no other choice currently than to simply put up with the form factor of the Z9, and what better way than to accept it than by deciding that you love it?
Your story seems fully logical and sound to me. I am on the pre-order list for a Z800PF, but in no hurry as long as my best option is the Z6II/Z7II, as I simply refuse to add 500 totally useless grams where the Z800 is so brilliant in shedding a lot of weight....Show more →

Some of it is surely cognitive dissonance. It's hard to talk about the negatives of a camera that you just spent 6K on. I am betting a lot of people if they had the choice would go with a gripless version if it existed.
Cognitive dissonance for one is a preference for another. I actually prefer the form factor of the Z9, the balance in handling, and the extra battery life. I did not like the way the A9 felt in my hands until I added a vertical grip. Of course, by the time I add the grip, I felt that the body now has a weak point as well as a spot where moisture can seep in.
ChrisMak , you've been complaining about the Z9 since the time it was introduced. The complaint has been the same each time... I think that you might want to just embrace your Sony system, as they have produced a body that is to your liking

Why is that shocking?
I don't think it is a big mystery.
In the end, whatever that feels comfortable in your hand is more important that just a number in kg.
Z9 VS A1, heavier but also larger and more comfortable grip make sense if Z9 happens to fit your hand better. If A1 feels more comfortable in your hand, nothing is wrong with that either but don't assume that just because you prefer one form factor means that everyone else have to prefer only your choice.
3.8 vs 2.9 kg and vs 0.7 kg vs 1.3 kg is not the same thing. I can handhold 3kg lens comfortably for significant amount of time but not 3.7kg (with Z9/D6 or D500 body), . On the other hand, I can hold 1.3kg camera just as easily as 0.7kg.
Also take into consideration that 2.9 kg also comes with much better balance so it is not just the weight.
In my experience, z9 + 400/2.8s is more comfortable to hold than say a Nikon Df + 500/4e FL, let alone 400/2.8e FL or 600/4e FL.
So what is there to be confused or perplexed about?

Thank you George. I haven't been able to get out much lately. We have (had?) a fall visit to FL scheduled for the end of next week, but that is not looking too good now. Even after the storm is gone, it's probably best to stay out of the way... :-/
Hoping for the best for our friends in FL and all the wildlife.

Yeah depending on where you were going lots of places are probably underwater. I'm sure Ding Darling, Estero Lagoon, Venice Rookery are pretty trashed. Might hit Merritt Island as well as it crosses over. Sad! I'm heading down in February myself.

Things are looking pretty grim now that there's daylight and the drones are flying.
That damn thing is about to become a Hurricane again and it appears to be moving in your general direction. Be safe!

Yes it looks horrible down there and will be a long time before they get moving again let alone near normal. It is heading to us now yes, however way weaker and will be a bit south of me so we should be fine. Just will be a day to stay inside and watch!

For those of you using the lens on a Z9 (probably 99%), do you notice the image jumping in the viewfinder when you take a shot? I’m assuming it’s the VR doing it’s thing but on my non IBIS body (Z50) it is quite hard to keep the focus point on target when it’s jumping around.

Not at all! I keep my Z9 mostly on sport vr and have not noticed any jumping! (Using 800pf)

Hey Rob,
I have both the Z50 & Z9.
I was intrigued at the thought of using the 800PF on my Z50 because it was fantastic with 500PF, even with a 1.4x TC. Sadly, the experience with 800PF is horrible. I understand what you are asking and the Z9 has none of that "jumping" you mention. After only a few minutes with the 800PF on my Z50 I began to think the Z50 may need a firmware update for the 800PF. From my perspective, the Z50 is basically unusable with the 800PF - it was that bad for me.
The Z9 is a dream - smooth as silk and zero blackout.

Thanks Phil, glad to know it’s not just me then!
I also had the Z50 and 500PF in the past and whilst not that great at moving targets, I didn’t have any real problems focusing or keeping the target in the VF and the results were also great.
Looking forward to using this lens with a better body although it’s so difficult to use I may actually contact Nikon.

Following on from my last post…
Went to a local airshow yesterday and although the keeper rate must have been less than 1% I managed to get a few shots, probably more luck than judgement lol
