From late autumn though the end of winter I spend a lot of time photographing migratory birds in California's Great Central Valley. While I do some of the usual bird-filling-the-frame shots, I'm more interested in photographing the birds as part of the winter landscape here — so some of the photographs are less "wildlife photography" and more "landscapes with birds." (A buddy and I actually did a "birdscapes" exhibit a few years back featuring some of this stuff.)
Lovely work Dan. I like these a lot. There is a lot of depth in several of these images, with the layering of the landscape and the birds and the sky. A most excellent set of work
Beautiful skies with lots of atmospheric conditions combine to create some really nice images, Dan! Always excellent work! The first and last images are my favorites. The black and white treatment on the last image is gorgeous!!!
"Cranes, First Light" in particular hits both genres -- landscape and wildlife -- equally well at the same time. The earlier comment about layering was right on, too. I'm inspired.
Beautiful work Dan! The landscape environment combined with the birds make for a visually interesting composition. It really creates a wonderful perspective.
I always enjoy your amazing images with subtle colors and nice mood. Great work
It seems you did not tell the snow geese where the camera was . I hate when they do this. You cannot bribe them to swim to you like pond ducks in city parks.
And yes, the geese are not very good at taking directions!

I really like these Dan. As a biologist and a photog, I really enjoy seeing wildlife in its environment presented as artistically as you have done here. "Birdscapes" is a great description. Thanks for sharing these!

Thanks for the comment and for sharing my interest in the environments where we find wildlife.
Gorgeous stuff and some amazing numbers of snow geese. I love the bands of color and texture in the first yet "Dormant Trees and Fog" is simply amazing.
