might consider it, but a really small 320g 24-70f4 would be a bigger appeal for me.
700g is still kinda big, I have lenses that size and I generally avoid
Original 24-70/4 must be on Sony's to-do-list. It is one of the weakest lenses in the line up. But being very consumer oriented, it is anyway very different from 24-70 GM mk2.
Sony has recently been more interested in increasing it's share in professional market. GM lenses are crucial for that.
This lens really shows what kind of expectations we have nowadays
The 70-200 II rocked our socks off, and this 24-70 II does most of what that did but we are already weary haha. I think they did great, but it won't make me upgrade from the Sigma 24-70. I feel like I already have 95% of this 24-70 II with that. The aperture ring is very nice, but that's not a requirement for me on a 24-70.
A potential practical downside I see for this 24-70 II GM is the protuding 82mm front element, with the barrel being skinnier on this lens. I sometimes already feel that way with the Sigma (where the barrel is fatter). I don't know, that might just be me.
2400 EUR is just too much for me for a standard zoom.
I also own the Sigma, and I'm generally pretty happy with it, particularly after getting the dust service / upgrade done. The focus speed and hit rate is laughably poor compared to the 70-200 GM ii, but I am shooting different subjects with the GM than the Sigma and the Sigma does passably on moving subjects and as everyone who has the 70-200 knows, it is a beast when paired with a stacked sensor body. I tend to use the 70-200 GM ii people in motion, the Sigma for relatively or completely stationary subjects. But what has really made my Sigma gather dust recently has been buying the Tamron 28-200. When paired with a tripod, I am finding it a joy for travel photography and don't really miss the Sigma at all. I should probably sell the Sigma and buy a 24GM, but a this point I'm so happy with my overall kit that I can't be bothered to go to the effort and would rather just head out and shoot more. The 24-70 GM ii looks spectacular, but for me at least, I'm going to keep shooting with the Tamron.

It looks like version II improved astigmatism at the wide range while increasing resolution/contrast at the long range. All this with a considerably smaller and lighter lens.
The Sigma was the lighter/cheaper alternative with high IQ but the new GM II is 140 grams lighter.

Yes, the Sigma is value king, but Sony have to keep up with Canon and Nikon on price, unfortunately for both Canon and Nikon that Sigma don't make lens for them yet... Hopefully soon.
I just watched five videos on the lens from the usual suspects. Not one of them really sold me on the amount of improvement over the GM. I sold mine due to dissatisfaction two years ago and none of them said run out and buy this lens like they have on the other GM releases.
It appears to be lackluster upgrade in terms of IQ than it's predecessor, the MTF charts are not very impressive compared to the orig GM. Sure it is better in most departments but IQ is the meat and potatoes for me. Reduced size, and other improvements in operation are nice but the only noticeable improvement over a not so hot GM 1 is at 70mm it leaves me cold and I will not be pre ordering.
Added after my earlier post
I ordered it but only because at times it's nice to have one lens with you and it is a great lens just not mind blowing IQ like I was hoping fo. So I will still use my primes 90% of the time but there will be occasions like car shows and other where I will use this lens.
Maybe the lens is good enough after all that I may use it more than 10% of the time we shall see that would be ok with me.

It is hard to believe that this lens could be the reason for their site to crash. . Sony people seem bored to death and this new lens will save us all.
I got my order in as soon as it went live - within the first minute.
Mostly because I am bored .. and am 75% sure I'll cancel my pre-order closer to ship date, so someone else will move up.

I can't get it ordered from B&H. It is hard to believe that this lens could be the reason for their site to crash.
Site worked fine for me at 10:00:00. When I was all done and checked out a checked time.gov again and it was 10:00:50 :-)
Hopefully it smooths out. Also kind of hoping Sony does SPS priority on this one since it is going to be just as popular if not more so than the 70-200II I bet.
I have tried different browsers and computers. I can't even login to see my past orders. It gives error messages. I ordered from Adorama within a couple of minutes as a backup. I just don't want to pay the sales tax.
I finally got it ordered...only 25 minutes late. In these times, that means it will be here in 6 months or so from B&H.
