This lens have to at least as good as the 70-200GM II if not better for people to consider
I would tend to agree with this sentiment. The standard zoom space is tight and there's lots of competition. There also just isn't as much room for improvement, compared to the tele-zooms. Hopefully Sony will prove us all wrong and go above and beyond.
"Sony will have a press event on April 24 at 9am PDT time. I am not sure if they will announce the new 24-70mm GM II on that day. But here are the rumored lens characteristics: ... "
If they added internal zooming, made it lighter, added an aperture ring, and made it sharper?!
These new GMs are changing my ideal kit constantly! Imagine their new 16-35 after their 12-24 and 14 lenses…

It would be really cool if the new 24-70 f2.8 gm2 were to have internal zooming as well as all the other benefits that were included in the 70-200 gm2
I haven't owned a 24-70 since my Canon days but if this lens is anything like the 70-200II with regards to sharpness, weight and internal zoom the 24-105 is gone. Internal zoom is spoiling me.

24-70mm internal zoom would be a first right ? I don't know if it's possible in this focal range.
I also really like this feature in the 70-200II.
Maybe internal 24-70mm zoom is possible, but it t would not be small and light. I do not see it happening.
Not MILC, but Nikon's 24-70mm f/2.8 G was internal zoom. That and Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRii were my lenses for years, both internal zoom. So it has been done, but not in MILC world, I guess.

Sony rumors has a blurry photo of the GM ii. Not an internal zoom. Looks like the Sigma 24-70 except the zoom rotates the right way and it has an aperature ring. Hard to judge the size, I compared to my sigma 24-70, it might be a touch shorter, but hard to say. Sony Rumors say announcement on Wednesday.
Still trying to think what it will offer over the Sigma for I expect 3x the price I picked up the Sigma for. Faster more accurate focus and potential for 30 fps.
I am very pleased with the lens optically but it is fairly heavy and large but I am used to both factors. Actually, there are other lenses I own, like 2 Sigma Art lenses the 35mm f/1.2 and 105mm f/1.4 that are relatively heavier and larger than the GM 24-70mm lens. I already lost quite a bit of money if I sell it right now. Yes, if I wait until the announcement, I will loos some more but at least I will know what kind of improvement the second version may bring to the table and whether it is worth it upgrading. But in case that Sony waits until later with the second version, then I will just keep the current lens.

Yes never easy decisions. Sometimes an upgrade for minor improvements isn't really worthwhile. Good luck
If you're a Sony zoom shooter and want a lot of flexibility, you've got to be happy with the potential combo of the 12-24 2.8, 24-70 2.8 II, & 70-200 2.8 II. Throw in a TC or two and that creates quite the 3 lens kit.

You know if you replaced the 600mm prime with the 200-600mm G, those three lenses would cover just about anything you wanted to shoot. If not, add the 12-24mm GM and that should do it.
