One of the 2 female hooded mergansers that hunted together for crayfish caught a sizable prey. In the beginning she seemed to handle the prey fairly well but she made a mistake by not grabbing the pinchers of the crayfish properly. Judging by the smaller size, she was maybe a little inexperience in subduing her prey.
During the struggle, the crayfish was able to pinch deep in the front area and stunned by the pain, the merganser made another mistake by releasing the crayfish completely. Determined for retaliation or more for survival, the crayfish tried to get on the back of the merganser. And it did succeed for a brief moment, seemingly it was ready to draw blood, by targeting the eye or eyes of the merganser. Panic-stricken, the merganser could just swim around in circle but luckily, the commotion attracted her nearby hunting buddy that rushed to help. Two against one... The second merganser was able to break the crayfish loose from the back of her buddy. Too bad most actions happened under water until the second merganser emerge victoriously, grabbing the crayfish at more strategic parts. After both pinchers were broken off, the crayfish met its fate…
I took 800+ hundred images of this life and death struggle. Alas, I had to condense it to 12 images...

Thank you very much, mrwrenn! Luckily, I had my camera on the tripod with the legs splayed out. Since I used the monitor to follow the action I could from time to time lift my head and looked at the actual scene.
