Anyone else looking forward to hearing more about the recently announced Voigtlander 23mm f/1.2 lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras with FX and NZ mount?

Coming from the Sony A7 w/ MF lenses, I've really missed my favorite lens - the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.7 VM. This announcement has me excited to see some sample shots.

I've had the Fuji XF 23/2 for a while, but it doesn't speak to me and I've been looking for a replacement. I recently added the TTArtisan 23mm f/1.4 and the combination of character, size, and speed has kept it on my camera quite a bit.

The Nikon version of the lens gets a special Nikon-esque design to the lens body - I wish they'd used that design for all versions of the lens. Still, the Fuji version doesn't look bad, better ergonomics than the VM 35/1.7.

Interesting for sure. Will the viewfinder get darker as you stop it down as with adapted lenses?

How do you mean?

When I stop down manual lenses, adapted and otherwise, on my X-E3 and X-T3, the VF darkens very briefly before the autoexposure system catches up and adapts.

Is this a Nikon Z thing, or are you talking about situations with manual exposure where the live view system isn't capable of producing an accurate approximation of the final product because the lens is stopped down too much relative to the amount of light?

I just tried with my TT Artisan 50mm f/1.2, which actually is a native X mount. Shooting in aperture priority mode, using the EVF, the viewfinder gets darker and darker for every f-stop I stop the lens down. Meaning manual focus is easier at f/1.2 than at say f/5.6. The exposure is correct by the viewfinder gets darker. I hope this make sense.

On Fuji you can either have the EVF show an accurate representation of final exposure, or you can have it showing the best possible version of the scene regardless. Turn Exposure preview on or off in the menus

Have you been happy with the TTArtisans 23, Aaron? I went through three copies on the E mount and none of them were well put-together. I'm hoping we'll see an E version of the Nokton. Assuming its performance is close to the other super-fast Noktons, it could be just the lens I'm looking for to make the NEX-7 jacket-pocket perfection.

On a different note, the design for the Z-mount looks to appeal to Zfc owners in a big way. They did a great job hitting the nostalgia buttons there.

Not well put together in what way?

Build wise, my copy is good. No play on the focus ring. Aperture ring and focus ring feel good, the focus ring is nicely dampened, feels nicer than a lot of my lenses. I don't like the silly slip on cap, and added two step up rings and use a 52mm cap. Same cap size as most of my concert shooting kit makes things easier.

I have minor ergonomic complaints like the spacing/interval of the aperture ring. f/1.4 to f/4 is half stops, f/4 up is full stops. I'd rather have all full or all half stops. Even so, I much prefer this over a completely declicked aperture ring.

I'm pretty happy with it so far. I've only done a sloppy aperture series, the mid and corners never totally clear up at infinity, but I can live with that. If I want a lens for cross-field sharpness, I'll take the Fuji 23/32. It does well wide open in the center and at rule-of-thirds intersection points, so I'm a happy camper. The OOF focus transition is OK.

First copy was mildly decentered and wouldn't stop down beyond f/4, second copy couldn't reach infinity, third copy had oil on the aperture blades and that's when I gave up. It sounds like you got a good copy on the first try. If I try again, it will probably be a used copy that's tested out well for its owner. Otherwise, I'll keep my fingers crossed for an E-mount Nokton.

Yeah, that isn't acceptable. Fortunately, nothing like that with my copy. I just checked for oil on the blades now, it's not something I watch for unless I'm seeing the aperture change slowly.

My copy does hit infinity and a little past, I haven't tried shimming it yet to fix the hard stop.

This is my second TTArtisans lens, the first was the 17/1.4, which I'm also enjoying. Trying to decide whether I keep it or the Fuji XF 18/2. I prefer the images of the TTA 17/1.4, but they seem to have the same light transmission and there are some advantages to the XF 18/2 like size, weight, and AF when you want it.

I did end up with two copies of the 17/1.4 by accident. One copy didn't reach infinity but had no other issues.

Voigtlander really knows how to get lens aficionados, and just by looking at the lenses!
Having said that, let's hope the performance is better than the 35mm f/1.2, I'm wasn't impressed by the reports I've read.

I get that making a 23mm makes sense since it's a classical focal length, but on Fujifilm 23mm options are now abundant. I would prefer if they made a 28mm. Wouldn't eve need such extreme aperture, something like 1.8 with good performance and plenty micro-contrast to aid with manual focus would be ok.

I will just keep on using my VM 40/1.2 for now. I guess the focus confirmation on the Nikon could be nice.
I hope we see a 16mm/18mm version some day.

Using the Voigtländer 35f1.2, I can tell you that is a very good lens with excellent IQ and rendering. It feels and handles very well on my X-T3. Two donwides: Communication with the camera is limited to newer modesl, and the iris doesn't stay open when stopped down until shutter release. The reviews are correct that the lens is on the softer side @f1.2 and f1.4. But very sharp from f2. But that is a featue, not a bug. If the 23f1.2 performs like that, I will buy it (though I don't really undertand the whyt that silver ring with the color markings is supposed to do It doesn't realy fit the look).

The picture at the start of this thread seems to be the Nikon Z version, and markings mimic the Nikon MF AiS lenses, the Fuji version seems to be similar in style to the 35/1.2

Yes, the Fuji lens looks different. I quite like the Nikon version and would love that as the universal design, maybe a little de-Nikonified but the focus ring looks great.

That said, the Fuji version looks solid.

I'll have to look up reviews of the 35/1.2 - I hadn't realized they've already gone down this line with APS-C yet. I love my 7Artisans 35/0.5 - it'd take something special to replace it.

I just checked out some reviews of the 35/1.2 - the output reminds me so much of the Voigtlander 40/1.4. While I definitely loved that lens, part of that trade off was the tiny size. Unlike the 40/1.4, this new APS-C 35/1.2 seems to strike a better balance between that soft look wide open and a sharper, more modern look stopped down a little.

Nikon depth of field marks. Color coded to match the color of the f/4 through f/16 lettering on the aperture ring. Classic Nikon.

FWIW, I have been using the 35mm Nockton f1,2 on my XT4 since it was released. It's a superb lens on that camera. The size of it is perfect. MF is extremely swift given the minimum ring twisting needed.

With a bit of luck my new 23mm will be delivered later today or tomorrow. I'd expect it's quality and ease of use to equal the 35.

The huge, clunky 16/80 sits on the lens shelf gathering dust. While I look forward to a longer, faster Voightlander.

some quick tests , nothing scientific , didn't use a tripod. Think I may have missed the close up @ 1.2 , but 1.2 about 5' away os pretty damn sharp.

min distance 1.4

min distance 1.2

crop @ 1.2 about 5' away
