Just came back from a week long vacation type of trip. My wife took me (for my birthday) to Big Island of Hawaii and we explore the island around the Kona area. It's much dryer than Hilo area but it still has some amazing scenery (and no mosquitos) that I found inspirational. But since this is just an island I drove all over (including Hilo's amazing botanical gardens) and Volcanic NP. I rented a 4 x 4 jeep and one day we went all the way up to the top of Mauna Kea for sunset. That's 13800 feet elevation!
I've hiked as high as 12K feet before but my wife has never been to such high altitude. She did just fine (little headache etc.) and the sunset was unforgettable. And, I finally had a chance to see all those huge observatories they have there. Geez, some are enormous, I had no idea....
Ok, here are some of the pics I took....
I was at the same (kinda) spot as the last picture a few years ago, when I did not know much about photography or astronomy, just used the green auto setting (!) ...
Nice set, makes me want to go back!!!
Gregg, love your work and am always learning from it. Your timing of capturing the setting sun is amazing. Especially the second last image. Thanks for sharing such a lovely set.
Very beautiful collection, Gregg! My sister lives on the big island and is always telling me about the gorgeous sunsets that she sees almost every day. The 3rd and 4th images are pure magic!
You have a great eye for the comps and building layers for distance and creating focal point areas. Drama, beauty, color dynamics and simple subjects that have come alive! Simply a treat for the soul, great work
Great shots. I've been to all the islands multiple times but never the Big Island...your pictures suggest I need to look into it sooner rather than later.

If I was you I'd be visiting the island (and sister) 10 times a year
There's so much to see/shoot. If you get a chance go and explore the place. Dark lava keyholes and cascades are amazing. I took 3000 shots (most are repetition of difference wave splashes) and I'll process them next, and share here.
So, go! I'll go next to Hilo and shoot some of those amazing flowers in the botanical gardens. Most leaves are all covered by the rain drops just sitting there all the time due to the moisture - a perfect place for macro photography.
I'll do the hike to the lava as well. It's about 1.5 miles each way so not bad.
