Here is a test comparing 400/2.8S + TC vs 600/4e FL +/- Tc
Basically I took 3 focal lengths each, 400/2.8S + internal TC @ 560mm, + TCx2 @800mm and internal TC+TCx2@ 1120mm.
600/4e FL with no TC, with TC14e iii @ 840mm, with TC20e iii @1200mm.
I took 3 shots for each focal lenght and picked the best looking one (all 3 of the same focal lenght pretty much looked the same, I just want to make sure that the result is consistant.
All shot at iso 64, shutterspeed was a bit different mainly because I took it at 6.30pm and light was fading fast. All shot on tripod with cable released. (forgot to turn VR sport off, opps).
600/4e FL was attached to FTZ ii. I have 2 TC20e iii and I used the better one of the two.
The distance is about 300+M
Here is the shot at 560mm
Spot focus AF-S on top right fan of AC Compressor.
left 400/2.8s, right 600/4e FL.
600/4e FL is a bit better than 400/2.8S with internal TC but 600/4e FL with TC falls behind 400/2.8S TC by quite a bit from
what I can see.
If I remember correctly when lenscore.org site was online, Nikon 600/4e FL was the sharpest lens tested on their 200mp sensor, edging out 400/2.8e FL and Canons counterpart a bit, Zeiss Otus, Leica 50/2 apo etc. So 400/2.8S with internal TC falled behind a bit is still pretty remarkable I think (at least my credit card said so ).

That site is still online http://www.lenscore.org/. According to them, 400mm 2.8E FL has more resolving power than 600mm f4E FL by a good margin (1466 points for 400mm vs 1387 for 600mm)

Thank you. That is what I was expecting. A bare lense will always have better performance then a lense with tc. The new 400mm is a really versatile lense. For what I like to do, the new 600mm f4s will be better but I woudn't mind the f2.8!! There is always a trade off to be made!! You are lucky to already have a 400mm 2.8s. Congrats!!

Opps, thanks, my memory was off
Glad to see the site is back. I think it was off line for quite a while I did not check it much but they also have not added anything much except may be Sigma Art 85/1.4 in the last few years.

I think it would be too good to be true for 400/2.8S with TC to be better than one of the top prime lens as well.
With 600/4e FL, I use it without TC and with TC14e iii about 50:50 so 400/2.8S really replaces it quite well
and the weight is much nicer. If 600/4S has internal TC, I would love to see what Nikon can do with it.

The new 600mm should be the same weight as the 400mm 2.8s. I am pretty sure it will have the internal tc too. That's what I am really hoping for anyway.

Today, one of my neighbor just told me that there are spotted owlets just minutes away from my apartment on foot so I grabbed my 400/2.8S and ran
Luckily, the park next to my apartment is still very new and trees are not so big and tall yet.
Initially, a spotted owlet flew in a was only about 3-4m away from me just a bit above my head for a couple of minutes before he took off to higher branch.
400mm f 2.8, no cropping.
560mm, f4 little cropping
After seeing video from Steve Perry where he said he could do 800PF handheld at 1/200, so I want to see at what speed I can handhole 400/2.8S with TCx2
800mm, f5.6, 1/200 , iso 1800
800mm, f5.6, 1/100, iso 560
I did not add any sharpening to any of these images in post processing.

With TCx2 and a some cropping.
While I try to avoid using 1120mm in general, yesterday I was waiting for this Black and Yellow Broadbill to come down to his nest forever but he just stayed up in a very high branch of a tree behind. So I thought was the hecke an took this shot at 1120mm, f8, 1/500, iso 900, handheld as I was moving around trying to find a decent background. Of course I heard from a friend that minutes after I left, he came down to his nest
This was also croppe down to about 12 mp before resizing.

Love seeing the Thai birds. Nice Banded Kingfisher and broadbill. That one is very tiny for those who don't know. Are these from KK?
Yes, both are from KK, Kang Krachan National park about 150 km from Bangkok. The blue-bearded bee eater above is also from KK. Now is nesting season for many birds in Thailand.

So I got the lens today and had about an hour or so to go out back and try a few backyard birds. Was very windy so it was kinda quiet and also cloudy so was shooting ISO 2000 and up to about 8000.
AF is so snappy with no TC's and with TC's hard to tell the difference except using internal plus TX2x together then a little slower but really really good!
I'll get out more tomorrow afternoon, have to take Easter bunny pics for the neighborhood kids party tomorrow so tied up half the day.....my good deed for the week! :-)
No sharpening added only Denoise on standard with sharpening down

The 2xTC on this lens looks really good!!
It sure is!! Doesn't really slow down the AF either at least that I can see so far. Will know more next week when I hit my regular spots! So far very happy!! A bit heavy compared to the 500pf but just need to get used to it. ♥️
