Oh wow, these are simply gorgeous. Dream lens for sure, but the person behind the lens is not too shabby either!

Regarding the pictures, you are correct. Bosque definitely has a "character" to it. Much like the Tetons and Yellowstone, there are some "trademark" features to the landscape. I have found that Bosque has some of the sweetest light in November and December, and will definitely be returning next year.

Something different today, we went to Magnolia Plantation in Charleston, a two hour trip from home. Once there made our way to Audubon Swamp which is a rookery at Magnolia Plantation! Nice morning but probably 2 weeks too soon however I got the following sequence which made the trip well worth it! It will get busier over the next few weeks there!

And this is why I wanted this lens...
I am far more interested in wildlife landscapes and low light photography than anything else. The world is saturated with beautiful wildlife portraits, and I feel as if I have nothing to contribute when it comes to this niche. While I love the thrill of getting close to my subjects and capturing the details in their fur or feathers, this type of photography remains a bit less fulfilling than trying to capture something uniquely interesting about the place where animals live.
When I decided to sell my 800PF to buy the 400 f2.8S, I was hoping to get a lens that would perform well at the edge of the day and/or help me capture a fleeting moment with a bit more fidelity (middle shot).
... Added one portrait (last image) as well, just because
Cheers,
bruce

It is a beautiful lens, and apparently very versatile. I guess that once you satisfy your desire to get close to nature/birds/animals, you will start to look more for the most suitable tool instead of the best IQ at the longest focal length.
The Z400/2.8 in that sense, offers much more versatility than the 800PF. I would really like a Z200-600 F5 PF lens myself.

Bruce,
Gorgeous images capturing exactly what you described. I am very fond of the wildlife photos that include or make work with the landscape showing the habitat and the environment. Much more so than the extreme closeups which is great for identifying or enjoy their expressions, but it does get a bit monotonous sometimes from my point of interest in appreciating photography.

Yes... the 400 f2.8 is super versatile with its matched converter. I can't distinguish images made with our without the converter. While I am certain there is a difference, these are trivial to me.
I really enjoyed the 800PF when I had it. The lens opened a doorway into a type of photography that was of little interest to me. Specifically, I spent a chunk of spring and fall photographing small migratory bird species. While this was fun, do to the excitement of seeing these colorful gems so close, these pictures do not fuel my passion for making images.
It took a long time for me to accept the financial hit I would take in buying the 400 f2.8, but in the end I feel it is the right tool for me right now.
As for your dream lens... that would be something. I could imagine that at f5, you could drive the price down just enough to approach the price of a 600mm f4...

Thanks Luka...
I can't agree with you more... there is something very compelling about looking at a well composed image of an animal or group of animals in their habitat. Done well, you get the beauty of. a compelling landscape juxtaposed with the questions one internalizes when thinking about what animals are doing or thinking.
I've been to Africa on safari on two occasions, and my favorite pictures from that trip are of a tiny cheetah looking out on the valley floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. Short of revisiting that location, I am constantly looking for photos that bring me back to that moment and the way felt when I saw it.

lovely work George!
I'll be down in SC for a week or two at the end of Feb. Never heard of that plantation or the swamp, but it's right next to my sister's place! will definitely have to stop by

Great shots! Maybe one day I'll be able to justify the cost of the big prime but I can't help to wonder if you took those images with 400 4.5 & 800 6.3 - would they look much different?
