A friend recently visited Turkey and I sent her these old images and thought I might add them here too. Back in '71 I was stationed in Turkey and heard about a mass that was to be held at Peter's Grotto in the city of Antakya. Back then the authorities only allowed the mass once a year, on Saint Peter's Feast Day, and Catholic and Greek Orthodox priests were allowed in to conduct the mass...
The Mass
A band leaving the celebration
I was raised a Catholic and afterward I found out that Catholics who attended the mass were given a Plenary Indulgence by the Vatican. Now, I grew up in the Baltimore Harbor area. I wasn't a really bad kid, but I wasn't good either. So, I guess I can use all the help I can get.

Near Little Italy, St Leo's? Went to their spaghetti dinners for many many years Charlie! Still drive over there of good Italian food and play bocci ball!
Super images Charlie!

Dan, thank you for your comments, they took me on quite a journey. I can't recall St Leo's but I have spent a good bit of time in Little Italy. I grew up in Canton, in an area sometimes called Little Ukrainia, but I always thought of it as Polish. My mom's family emigrated there and I attended Polish Catholic Churches and elementary schools. St. Casimir and St. Stanislaus were our churches and as a youth, I always thought of St. Stan, which seemed so big and stately, as being our direct portal to the Vatican. What memories. Every 4-5 years we travel back from Colorado in what we call the loop, going east through the south, always up the Chesapeake Peninsula, and then dropping down into East Baltimore. Unfortunately, the Pandemic has delayed this, we need to get back.

Great capture Heron! Someone reading a newspaper. Not sure I have seen that in a long time! In fact I believe I have only seen 1 person reading a periodical for many years and that was me!!

I know the entire area very well Charlie! It has changed somewhat since your, and my, last visit. The core ethnic communities still stand. It is the surrounding areas that are becoming the "in places" for condos.
St Leos is right in Little Italy.
Hope you can return soon!
