So far no issues with Sandisk pro 128, same on AV pro 160, but yesteday shot over 800 shots...Rough-legged Hawk...not easy lol...and the SonyCF 128 locked up once...took the battery out and all was good again...I left it in use to see if it was going to happen again, it did not.
fortunately i have not encountered this issue yet after 10k or so shots. I am still on original FW. My cards are Delkin Power and Pro Grade Gold. The AV Pro SX 160GB is coming today. I also don't charge battery via the camera.
I had the problem with two XQD cards with the D500 and both were sent back to their manufacturer and the replacement cards worked without incident.
The EN-EL18d battery used by the Z9 can be charged with a standard EN-EL18 battery charger. I use a third party verion of the Nikon MH-26 charger with no problems. I charged a EN-EL18d battery prior to getting the Z9 so I would have a good battery on day one. It took many hours to charge the dead EN-EL18d that shipped with the Z9 and using the single battery charger provided.

I think the best card to use is the one that Nikon used to test the camera in development. This can be found in each camera's reference manual on the pages which report the memory buffer performance. For the D6 the card Nikon used is the Sony 128 GB CFexpress card, and for the Z9 it is the 325 GB ProGrade Digital Cobalt 1700R card. (I am sure they tested others but this is probably what they found to perform best.)
Both gannis on this thread and another user "kastraelie" on the BCG forum thread are using the Prograde Cobalt 325GB card and getting these lockups.
I have the Cobalt 325GB and 2 Velocity CINE 128GB cards and have yet to have a hiccup or lock up of any kind. About 10k shots so far. Got the Z9 on 1/13 so just a month old now. I have never charged the battery in camera and use the supplied 18D and bought an 18C new off Amazon with no issues with either. I also format the card in camera every time I pull it out and offload images to the PC.
Matt Granger has a spreadsheet you can download with the results of testing many cards including XQD on the Z9. Note, the fastest XQD cards are faster than the slowest CFE B cards. Eg Prograde gold is a much worse choice than Nikon or Sony XQD.
You forgot the Sony A7r IV - which also locks up from time to time. 🙄

I think these are just complex computers now a days and they crash every so often. There are threads about A1 locking up, R5 locking up, R3 locking up and now Z9 locking up.
For the record I never had a lockup with mine. I did swap batteries to my 2nd one a couple times and I used a 512GB Sandisk CFExpress card.
Just had my first lockup. I lost the whole burst of images and had to remove battery to reboot the camera. Only variables for my session today, Been shooting he* since I bought the camera. I switched to lossless compressed so I could use fastrawviewer, and I was using hdmi output to external monitor.
I haven’t had a lockup since I did a firmware update. I did have the flip out screen turn off multiple times yesterday while I was using the camera. I did take 5k plus photos. As soon as I would hit the AF-on button the evf would immediately turn off. I had that happen at least 3 times. I had to pull the battery to get things right again. On a side note I also had something else weird happen. It did this twice yesterday. While looking through the viewfinder parts of the image be lit up in red. Maybe I hit some button that caused this. I have no clue. It was like all the main features of the image were highlighted in red. Any thoughts

Did you try re-setting the camera to give priority to the LCD screen before you reset? You might have hit the little selector button by mistake.
If your LCD screen turns off suddenly, this is most likely due to the vertical shutter button getting pressed inadvertently. Can you pls. try to lock the vertical shutter button and see if this happens? In my case, the lower end of my palm kept hitting the vertical shutter button and it took quite sometime for me to even figure this out.

Quick update- couple of weeks back my Z9 became almost unusable as this error kept showing after every shutter press. I sent it back to Nikon on 3rd March and received it today (14th March).According to the service technician, this error was due to the faulty sensor shield. They have replaced the unit and sent back the faulty unit to Japan for further investigation.
The after sales service in India was as usual sub-par. They couldn't even offer a stand-by camera while my Z9 was gone (my bad I sold my D850 soon after the Z9 purchase). When I collected the camera today, I asked them if they'd provide a service report or at least mention in the Invoice as to what exactly was the problem and how it was resolved and they told me they won't be able to write anything specific. So all I can see in the technical remark is "Camera repaired. Camera working fine. Firmware updated."
I truly hope whoever serviced the camera exactly knew what they were doing and this nasty error doesn't show up again.
