No, they are a mix of CF EXPRESS A, and SD cards. I was responding to the posts referencing the a1, the Sony cards in general, and your post on Tough cards which these are.

I have never had a problem with a card from any manufacturer when shooting Nikon or Sony except for two Delkin Black cards for my D810 that were recalled.

In my case i don't think its due to the CFE cards/ temperature. I use Prograde Cobalt cards and the temperature here is quite hot and humid (about 28-30 degrees Celcius and its supposed to be "winter" here ). Problem is i never removed my battery even once after i bought my Z9 as i was using the USB C charger.

I haven't seen this error for 2 days now after i removed the battery and put it back so not sure, it could just be a one-off thingy.

28-30 celsius in winter ... sounds glorious 😍
Here in my city, it is -5 celsius and later this week, it will be -17 celsius.

the issue at hand is the CFexpress B card as used in the Z9

actually, again i am referring to the Sony Tough CFexpress B card when said card is being used as a reference.

any issues with cards of the CFexpress A or SD types are irrelevant here as this camera does not use them

we should stay on point within the boundaries of the relevant hardware at hand.

just for reference, is the Sony CFexpB card you have a new purchase, or did you already own it and used in another camera like a Z6 or Z7 families?

do you know a friend that has any of the earlier Z models that would allow you to try it out in one of those?

my card (near 3 years old now) was originally used in the Z6 and other bodies w/o issues.

just trying to eliminate the obvious. that being:
- is it a card issue?
- is it a camera body/OS issue?

What, Where, When, How then hopefully we come up with Why

if you say no issues for this time after RnR of the battery continue shooting with said card with gusto and see how it reacts to some good hard work

You are not the only one here.

Others had posted that cards in general are most often the cause of such things. Still others had posted that this was the case on the a1 as well. I answered generically to them and specifically to your specific question.

That is all, nothing more.

That's the card I was using Sony tough 128. Temps were below freezing and it happened when I was shooting a long burst of an incoming Hawk, buffer did not fill..Camera stayed on could see last photo on back screen but was locked up, so it was still on..removed battery and all was well. tried a different card and later when I was shooting Short- eared Owls on a burst, it happened again..few days off now weather related, but going to get real cold again so see what happens next time. Anyway I still love the camera. I went through the Z's 7..7ll and they didn't work for me, so I went to Canon R5 it's great camera. I was always a Nikon Shooter, just sold my D6...killer but got use to the silent shutter. I really like the Z9 and now the R5 sleeps in the cabinet for now. I'm sure this issue will get resolved.

Thanks for the comments

maybe we work within the boundaries the equivalent product. there are differences between the CFexp type A and the SD that can introduce another set of issues unrelated and not to be dealt with here. again, we should stay on point. one disaster at a time.

So i use Prograde Cobalt CFE B cards and it is a brand new one i bought after i bought the Z9. The first time i got this error was when i was charging the camera using USB C adapter (the Nikon one) and then i turned the camera on while it was charging. I am unable to correlate this with anything else other than removing the battery physically and putting it back. Of course this is a solution only if i don't see this error show up yet again :-)

so, we have 2 complaints against the the sony tough 128 on the z9. one in high temp one in low temp usage. well, I'll go in search of some wicked cold this weekend after its done raining today and pop in my Sony tough and see how really tough it is.

there is a utility to check your card out from Sony.

https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/support/memorycard/sd/ssu/en/index.html

i can't get it to work on my computer though

i can only suggest you try charging it on the external charger only a few times for a reference.

if you are charging in camera and want to play with it discontinue charge and pull the plug.

Now I remember I had card error episode with D500 and Sony XQD card once. Camera did not lock up but I kept getting error message after taking a few shots. Took the battery out and put it back in, I could shoot a few more shots then the same error message. After changing to another XQD card, everything was fine. That was while I was shooting red crown crane in Japan at -10C.
The problematic card since then had work perfectly fine also even at -30C when I was in Baikal, Russia.
Very strange.

That's the problem. In India, the Z9 does not come with a bundled external charger due to some delay in getting govt clearance. So they gave us a free EH-7p USB adapter. No Idea if we will get a free charger retrospectively so I'll have to wait until it's available to be bought separately.

it's not really free that it is half the equation as that is part of the external charger assy. are they eventually going to send you the other half when you govt passes it?

i charge my camera with a Hyper 66w charger when i don't have the MH-33 with me. also have a good cable

Temp never went above 20 degrees and very windy, took over 600+ shots, no issues with Delkin Black
256gb I froze camera didn't...

Only issue i have is the initial focus lock...loves the background, shooting BIF, but once it locks works great.. I tried single point and that has issues. you can have the bird in the frame and it won't grab at times have to focus on the ground near the birds that I'm trying to shoot sometimes to help the lock...not liking that, but only had camera a few week now ! I was shooting a D6 and its no D6 for AF.

So this issue is still not resolved for me. removing the battery and putting it back helped but it still keeps cropping up every now and then and yesterday it happened right in the middle of shooting a decisive moment. This is quite annoying :-(

this person at BCG forum has made a video about the error

Indeed. Way too many complaints about Sony cards on FM for me to consider touching them. Sandisk seem to have the best reliability, anecdotally.

Alas way too slow write speeds for the Z9 with SanDisk if you want to maximise it's potential.

i have a 2+-year-old version of this card. after reading about your issues i swapped it in to my Z9 from my Z6 and started shooting with it over the past weeks and have not experienced this issue. evidently Sony did something along the way between the time mine was produced and the recent revisions. i do believe the Sony card has a 3-year warranty at least in the US. i would definitely exercise your warranty rights asap.

Why are we concluding this is a Sony card issue? All I see is n=1 for a Sony card and n=1 for a Prograde Cobalt card.

I also agree with Whayne....SanDisk is the last manufacturer one should be looking at with CFExpress cards. For one they are slower than many others, the hottest of the bunch and have numerous problems with other cameras (namely Canon which is ironic as Canon uses them for all their internal testing).

I think the best card to use is the one that Nikon used to test the camera in development. This can be found in each camera's reference manual on the pages which report the memory buffer performance. For the D6 the card Nikon used is the Sony 128 GB CFexpress card, and for the Z9 it is the 325 GB ProGrade Digital Cobalt 1700R card. (I am sure they tested others but this is probably what they found to perform best.)
