I think for this shoot if you are regularly using flash, then the A1 makes a ton of sense and it is the camera you really want and knowing you, you are going to get one at some point anyway. So going that route certainly makes sense, but the A9 II and the 1.4 TC I think will do just as well for this shoot as long as the lighting is continuous and not flash. One big difference between the A1 and the A9(II) besides the resolution is that the a1 does beautifully with flash up to 1/200 sync speed in electronic shutter. You really need mechanical shutter with flash and the A9 (II) as you already know.

I'm also a pro and the extra megapixels are a great asset. Shooting in APS-C mode with the programmed C3 bottom on back of camera still yields 26.2 MP. It's plenty responsive and quick to focus if you have not shot with it previously.
The A7R4 is a great camera, but it's not an A1.
I'd want the AF power of the A1 if I were still doing any kind of paying jobs. But now I'm fully retired and loving my A1!

As I understand the OP's wants/needs, he is not inclined to plunk down the $$$ for the A1 but does want increased megapixels. On the other hand, he plans to rent it "once." Many of us have gone down this path leading to the inevitable emotional point of no return. . .

I’m ordering the 70-200 immediately and the TC but I may still get a A1 as I know it would certainly not hurt me at all and having a 50mpx sword on hand would be helpful in many ways. I will wait till maybe next month as my smugmug money comes in. Which I did pretty good so far. If I could at least get 3k for my A9II that would help me feel good I did not lose my shirt.
One point I need to make is if I stop I won’t be shooting much at all . I put millions of mileage on me and I have nothing to prove in photography. Now dropping my golf handicap 5 strokes would be lovely. I know this is a hobby for many even after you retire it’s not for me. I have a different mindset on it, it’s been a business for a long time. Why I’m having difficulty deciding what I want to do when I grow up and move on.

The a1 is just specification talk until you try one. Then it becomes very real. So many improvements that don't even get talked about. Every other camera feels like going backwards. It is a bigger improvement than you just experienced with the new 70-200. Seriously that combo is magic.

Looking at linear resolution is always something one should do instead of just looking at MP in total. Cropping out a portrait format image (something we have to do sometimes) leads to 14.6MP vs. 10.6 MP images, which amounts to 40cm vs. 34 cm images printed to 300 dpi.
Nevertheless, the A9 has an AA filter which is not that weak. I have read conflicting reports about the A7iv with probably a weak AA filter. Would mean less sharpening necessary, which I would prefer.
I got the Sony 70-200 coming today. Im trying to do the math on the A1. Will see what I can work out. Cheap thinking if I got the A1 I dont need the TC really, thats 500 bucks saved

If you’re a pro, the decision to buy gear shouldn’t have an impact on your personal finances. The business either brings in the dough or doesn’t. If it does, your wife will have the shoes and you the A1, which is really what you want. If it doesn’t, then you have other problems.

You sure you won’t shoot after you retire? I have a hard time believing that because you seem all in with photography.

I rented one and don’t want to buy one, even though technically it’s awesome. But, yes, I hesitated before renting it because I was expecting to like it too much.

If I’m shooting outside it and not for clients than it’s meaningless to me. This is not for joy of my life. 45 years to make a living. I’m kinda done or how far should I go. If I buy a A1 it’s really kinda a waste but I’m stubborn as hell to. I’m not that into it in a way

Get a clue? Sure, you’re the business. Doesn’t mean you don’t set up a budget for the business separately from the household.
You’re always going on about how you’re a pro. Okay, simple then: if the A1 makes business sense you get it; if it doesn’t, don’t get it. Everything else is your personal desire, which I understand, but it’s not a business decision anymore.
And if you want the A1 even if it doesn’t make business sense, then obviously photography is still more to you than just a career, because you care beyond what makes business sense.
