p.1 #1 · Sony A7IV VS the A9II its the MPX

I love the A9II as it does a load of stuff with no whining at all but im missing more MPX. Now I dont shoot sports , wildlife or stuff like that so that whole rolling shutter does not mean much to me and I never ever shot more than 5FPS and even that is rare. Im going through my images I shot last week and in crop mode because I need 300mm just maybe not enough sauce for me. 33 mpx may just make me feel better and with the new 70-200mm which I am in the process of buying it be really nice to have the 33mpx. I would be giving up LED with electronic shutter but even if I burned 30 K images a year on a 2500 dollar body in mechanical shutter it certainly won't kill me. I sell these images the cam pays for itself in less than a month so its not so much a cost thing and really costs per say are meaningless since im a working stiff at this and never put much into that. I know 9mpx difference is certainly minimal for sure but I just want MORE. I m a pig that I know. Im also going into retirement as well. Im not shooting many gigs anymore and really want to get out per say. I do want all the bells and whistles when it comes to AF and such and they seem very similar. Frankly I want a new toy too.

This is not life and death decision but maybe worth the conversation. For me its a itch

I know others are thinking about this as well. Thoughts

There was plenty of speculation about a higher MP stacked sensor camera before the A7IV launched. A 36MP camera, to be exact. For all we know that's still around the corner somewhere.
We can only hope

Your dilemma sounds decidedly a1-shaped, to me Sorry to be an enabler of reckless spending! But as you said it pays for itself quickly in your situation.

You'll have all the autofocus you could want, and you'll have all the megapickles you could want, and you'll be done with upgrading.

The A7IV by contrast just isn't all that much more resolution than you've already got.

I know your a serious enabler.

I know it makes sense in many ways. Also given these new M1 chips in the MacBooks these raws fly with processing so given the amount of images its really not that painful . That has always been a restriction I had in the past but now I can bang stuff out fast. Last week the files flew in C1

Oh and I still have a wife so if I want to keep her this would cost a shit load in shoes and purses. ROTFLMAO

The cure for itches come in a package called the a1. It really makes a monster out of the new 70-200 f/2.8 GM II.

Just saying...

RIV on B&S + MacBook M1 <$ than A1 That's a formula that would work for me if I did your style of photography. But wait, didn't you use to have a RIV? Better start scratchin', Guy

Don't you have a ZV-10 for fun? If so...I know what'd be even more fun...sell it along with the A9II and any lenses you don't really need, and buy an A1.

This is coming from someone who owns an A7RIV and just bought a used A9 for sports. Sure I could sell a few lenses and just get an A1 instead, but for me when I need an action cam, I don't need the MP, and when I need the MP, I don't need the FPS/autofocus, so I'm ok with 2.

Honestly id rather put that 6500 into my retirement plan or take a seriously long trip

I do have the ZV-10 with the Tamron 11-20 and Sigma 18-50 and they are nice lenses . Great travel cam for me.

Im trying to buy the 70-200 Version II if I can find one.

But yes the A1 is the answer I just dont like the question.

As far as glass I have very little Sony 20/35/Sigma 65 and Batis 135

Now what really looks cool is the new Leica M11 at 60 mpx. Only 8500

If you want more megapixels, just get a nice pre-enjoyed a7R IV. I don't see much gain going from an a9 II to an a7 IV.
24mp to 33mp = +38%
24mp to 61mp = +154%

Guy knows that any solution short of the a1 will leave him less than satisfied. He just can't face the costs involved yet. He has been "about to retire" so saving money for many years now.

One is never done upgrading. The A1ii should be out in about two years.

A1 is the way to go, don't think about a camera from how much it cost but how much it drop in value between you buy it and you sell it, if you get an A1 used it's about 5700-5800, I think you can still get over 4000 from it in another 2 to 3 years, so it's only like 600 per year, that really don't sound that bad since you make money from this 600 is like a week of your work... also with A1 you can shoot all the photos without using the mechanical shutter, both of my A1s still have 0 shutter count... I believe I shot 50,000+ photos with each... but who cares about how many electronic shutter? an hour of video shooting is like 108,000 photos(30x60x60).

A9II + Adobe super resolution/Topaz Gigapixel. Not sure if you can batch process them but worth looking at. Or just buy the A1. It's my only camera now. Sold A7RIV, A9, GFX 50S.

Gosh I'd consider it a massive downgrade unless you live to do video. Going from a stacked sensor to one so glacially slow and back to EVF blackout would drive me nuts.

I agree with dakel, about super res and gigapixel and you can batch process. Super res works best if you have a lot of detail, so not with heavy crops.

I'd rather add an A7RIII to my A9II than get an A7IV.

This is a bit too strong an opinion, imo. I would make the decision based on A9 or A9ii differently, especially when using flash often.
The A7iv can be a great alternative to the A9, as the mechanical shutter esp. with flash is not that great (personally, I don't like the mechanical shutter).

The A9ii is greatly improved this way and the decision is more biased towards the A9ii in that case in my opinion.

I'm giving the A9v1 a shot for indoor sports...should be here in time for a volleyball tourney next weekend. we'll see if I run into any banding issues, my recon suggests I'll be fine considering the types of venues I'll be shooting in. We'll see if it works out.

Guy for you the A9II and new 70-200 II seems like such a solid choice for what you're shooting, but if you need more mpx I'm guessing you can't go wrong with the A7IV....and yea 30k a year on it wouldn't be a big deal after you've gotten your money's worth out of it over a number of gigs.

So what I forgot was it’s the crop mode that’s where my issue is as I’m trying to get a 300 and my drops kinda low. If I bought the 70-200 with the 1.4 TC I’d get 300 and 24mpx. Not maybe my answer as crop mode is the culprit. I’m buying the 70-200 version II anyway but I’ll add the 1.4. I think I read it works really well. I have enough light doing the runway stuff

Guy, having seen multiple posts on this in various threads:

1. Figure out what you want for your personal shooting without consideration for your yearly event with 20-30k shots. Based on you prior posts, I'm guessing the A1 is out of the running based on costs. With all your experience, I suspect you have a good idea what you would like in a camera for your personal stuff (with work mixed in as you transition to retirement on your terms).

2. For your yearly event: If your personal camera is suitable, evaluate the depreciation vs rental costs. I would lean towards shooting the body you have instead of renting. When you want to sell I suspect you will be able to find a buyer who won't care if the shutter count is a bit higher. If you are thinking of using a low MP camera (<50MP) then rent the 1.4TC with the 70-200 to get you to 300mm. If you plan on using a high MP camera for the event then you could skip the 1.4TC as it is effectively built into the high resolution of the sensor. Looking at lensrentals, the TC is only $36 for a week. Given the low cost of renting the TC it would be reasonable to stick with a lower MP sensor if you want.
