First off you went out of bounds here. I DO NOT need advice on finances , my business or my life. Thanks Ive done just fine and Im old enough and got through life just fine.
The question here has always been I have a 24mpx camera thats not exactly giving me a file that I want in crop mode its a little too small, second part if I got a 33mpx cam at lower cost and just buried the mechanical shutter in a two year span would that 9 mpx increase help me much in crop mode, Thirdly if I went with 50mpx in crop mode seems like the best answer and I could stay electronic like my A9II which would be what a 26mpx cam than or would just getting the TC 1.4 be equivalent to that with this new 70-200. The previous 70-200 I would never buy because it always sucked pretty much when I rented it. Given this new one my bet is the TC 1.4 would be much better on it. This new Zoom opened up doors I would not go for before.
Now I can buy anything I want that is not the question and the worth of all that is ultimately my decision. Im still tuned to ROI and I always been with that thought pattern. Everything being very similar here if I went with my A9II with the TC im still at 24mpx because I added the TC but if I bought the A1 and used crop mode instead of adding a TVC im not sure of the number but I think its 26mpx. Of course I would not always be in crop mode but is the A1 worth it for just this singular situation. It may not be thats what has me bouncing around on it
What's really changed here is the new Zoom after renting it I bought one( be here Thursday ) and I hate zooms but this has the quality that I never seen on this focal length type zoom. I feel I could get away with a TC and maintain 24mpx . As we all know TC 1.4 will degrade as well but given these Sony TC are good and this new Zoom is outstanding we are not going to lose much here than going 50 mpx No TC and just drop into crop mode. As Steve mentioned this is worth a serious test. Thats the math. Be very interesting to know. Now the A1 no question outside this would be killer to have. MY decision is do I really want to invest in it. I actually have 3 income sources so its not the money its the time I want to be in any one of them. Photography in truth has slipped for me as im losing interest in it. My hobby is Golf I play a lot and I work as a golf ranger making very little money from it but play one of the best course in Arizona with my friends and family for FREE. At close to 400 a round thats a huge perk.
For now I bought the Zoom and regardless what I do I think I will get the TC to go with it. I could always go shoot squirrels.

Don’t tell me I have to get a clue and expect me to take it kindly. My initial comment was related to this, coming from you: “ Oh and I still have a wife so if I want to keep her this would cost a shit load in shoes and purses. ROTFLMAO.” Now, maybe that was just a joke, but it certainly didn’t sound that getting an A1 made financial sense to you in this stage of your career.
Overall, you always have this macho attitude on these forums, as if you don’t need anybody else because you know it all already since you’re a pro and you’ve been doing this forever. So, maybe I’m just surprised you’re actually asking a real question instead of going through your usual exercise of letting us know you again need the shiny new toy.
I will be shooting in Death Valley starting Thursday this week. My longest lens will be the 70-200 GM II + TC + crop. I have tested this. IQ is great and file size is still adequate for a big print if needed.
This is great small package for that kind of reach.
Well that was pleasant. Obviously you have zero sense of humor or whatever. Of course it was a joke.
You forget to have a budget for me and one for business. You got a business degree to offer lame advice. That’s what YOU started. Ill finish it. Go away you offered nothing to the question but lets jump on a Pro and give him a hard time. There is a reason many Pros are not here , your one of them
To others thanks for the help, appreciate it . It actually brought a few things to mind

Thanks thats what i keep reading this is a nice combo.
BTW this was your first comment which offered nothing to the thread start. I took offense to it and certainly dont deserve that attitude.
If you’re a pro, the decision to buy gear shouldn’t have an impact on your personal finances. The business either brings in the dough or doesn’t. If it does, your wife will have the shoes and you the A1, which is really what you want. If it doesn’t, then you have other problems.

You're making several assumptions about me that aren't correct and blame me for something you have no clue about.
Let's just say we rub each other the wrong way. Enjoy your A1...

I'll grant you that. It didn't address the thread start but instead addressed the progression of the thread up to the point of the post I quoted.

You did the same to me and you did it first. This is about photography related forum. Not how to run my life. Now I know I said is the A1 really worth it. Kinda why I have yet to buy it yet.
I haven't read the whole thread, and this is not intended to be snarky.
Do your clients have any idea what resolution your images are? I'm a graphic designer by trade, and 90% of my clients don't have the slightest idea about resolution. Extra resolution might make me feel better, but my clients generally don't care.

To get the resolution you'd have on any given full-frame camera when you activate APS-C Crop mode, divide the camera's megapixel count by about 2.3.
An A7Riv has a ~61 megapixel resolution and a ~26 megapixel crop (this is probably where you were getting the 26 MP number in your head from)
An A7Rii/iii has a ~42 megapixel resolution and a ~18 megapixel crop.
An A1 has a ~50 megapixel resolution and a ~21 megapixel crop
The A9 you've got now has a ~10 megapixel crop.
The A7IV you're considering has a ~14 megapixel crop
Thanks I won’t like to stay around 20mpx instead of 10 mpx . As it is now with the A9II it’s a little too small. I would like to get to either 20or 24. I just ordered the TC still gives me a 300mm and I still keep 24. To me that’s going to be ideal. Now going to the A1 at 21 with crop only would be around the same at 20mpx. In a sense not buying anything really with using crop or TC but of course the A1 is a 50 mpx monster I can use otherwise this type of job.

Not snarky at all and in most cases it’s not going to matter much but I have been beat by clients too. Either cropping the heck out of it and you as a designer probably has done it too. But also going past the intended use case. I walked in a clients cafeteria and they had a mural 60 ft wide on the wall and I shot a 12mpx cam and I was embarrassed to no end. I actually went out and bought a Medium format back. So yes most won’t know nor care but if it looks bad than your in trouble. 1st rule is cover your ass.
Today I don’t want to go below 20mpx just as a security blanket

If you don't want to go below 20mp the A7iv is out of the question if you intend to use APSC mode, right?
Did you end up getting the A1 or are you sitting tight with the A9ii? I've loved the APSC mode on the 7Riv but I know you said that won't work for you.

Guy, I think the 1.4 TC approach makes tons of sense for you. You would have to do careful side by side testing to determine whether your 70-200 f/2.8 II plus TC on the A9 II or A1 in crop mode with the bare 70-200 f/2.8 II is better. Keep in mind you lose about a stop of dynamic range, you get the noise of using about a stop higher ISO, and you get about a stop more depth of field when you crop and how that compares to the optical loss of using the TC is hard to tell. It is not like the only loss in cropping is the resolution. You get losses across the board. I know you know all that, but I would add my speculation that the A9 II plus 1.4 TC might actually be better in this situation. The new Sony 1.4 TC is really really good. So is the 70-200 f/2.8 II, so the optical loss of using the TC is going to be about as small as it gets, and in looking at careful tests of these comparisons over the years as the TCs get better the TC plus lens beats cropping in most instances....Show more →
I own the A1 with 70-200GM Mkii and 1.4tc. I can tell you that combo is still sharper than my 100400GM I had at around 300mm. And I can crop heavily while retaining impressive image quality ... So cropping to 420mm leaves me with approx 21mpx. Enough in most cases
