p.1 #1 · Canon R1 or R3

so am currently using the 1DX III but would like to go mirrorless - I was about ready to order the R3 and then i read that this will not be Canons flagship mirrorless and there will be an R1 released possibly Q4 this year. Some sites say this will be a slower camera but higher resolution ..... who knows. Anyone else in this position trying to decide on going with the R3 now or waiting for the R1....thoughts?

Does the R3 do what you need it to do? If so, why wait? If not, wait.

+1

Canon made it very clear that the R3 is not their flagship mirrorless body.
However many, if not all, 1DXIII users that have tried the R3 have switched over to the R3 because they have found it to be a superior body. It can do everything the current Canon flagship can do but better. Especially in regards to the AF system.

Depends what you shoot. Sports? Just get the R3. Birds, wildlife? Wait. Anything else? Get the R6 or R5.

If the OP is using their 1DXIII for Birds and Wildlife now, why wait for a camera that hasn't even been pre-announced yet? Who knows how long it will be for the R1 announcement let alone how long after that it will start shipping in todays world.

I say grab the R3 now and sell it at a slight loss when the R1 is released. Why sit on the porch for a year or so when there's fun to be had now?

So, the R3, though depending on the sports the R5/6 might be fine too.

Canon declaring the R3 to “not be a flagship” means basically nothing. It’s better than the 1DX III which they consider to be the current flagship. It just doesn’t have dual CFExpress slots.

More than likely the R1 will introduce quad pixel AF, and have a higher resolution sensor.

If you are shooting indoor sports, and you really want to go mirrorless now, I cannot see a single reason why you wouldn’t get the R3.

You will not be able to shoot with an R1 any time in 2022. So get any of the other R3/5/6 cameras, they will do what you need now.

I held out on getting the R3 at first, figured my 1DX3 was more than sufficient. However, I found myself starting to use the LCD to shoot more and more. I prefer to stick my eyeball into the VF as I found that a much more steady position to hold, especially with heavier/longer lenses. So I took the plunge.

This isn't like me buying a Ferrari to drive, but this is like buying a Ferrari to shoot photos/videos. But I get to use it more often and enjoy the results that I get, more than I would probably ever get owning/driving a Ferrari. (Disclaimer: A friend of mine did let me drive his so I think I am qualified to make the comparison. )

If finances aren't there, definitely don't go into debt for it. But if you can scrape up the change (check the sofa cushions), I have found that it has been a true joy to use. I find it the next logical step beyond the 1DX3. It's very responsive, the image quality is nice, files are easy to work with. I wished it had 2 CFE slots instead but meh... that wasn't a deal breaker.

The sad part is that not many people are interested in buying a used 1DX3 in this economy and current state of the pandemic.

p.1 #11 · Canon R1 or R3

I had planned on getting a 1dx3 when they were first released but then covid happened. The R3 was announced and then released. It does everything the 1dx3 does and more, plus it is $500 less money. I ordered, then waited, and finally it arrived this past Monday. It only took about 5 minutes of use for me to realize it was smart to wait; the R3 is amazing! Having said that though, if I had already had a 1dx3 I would not have purchased the R3 given the specs of both machines. You will like the R3 without a doubt, but in my opinion, I don't know if it is enough of an upgrade to justify the purchase if you already have a 1dx3.

I would imagine the pending R1 will likely be a higher resolution version of R3 with a few improvements. It is going to be tough to improve on the R3 other than resolution.

The 1Dx3 is hardly a slouch. Looks like a pretty amazing camera. What is it you feel 1Dx3 is not doing that the R3 would do, any shots you are missing?

1Dx3 has some pretty amazing mirrorless capabilities in LV. A hoodman to take advantage of these capabilities might be a bit of a hassle but so is selling a body, buying another, and having to manage in between. And that's before discussing any financial loss. I might keep riding with the 1Dx3 myself.

The R1 I have no idea. 83mp ff camera having 32mp aps pixel density rumored by last year I think? So who knows.

If one was going to go through all of that to use the 1dx3 in mirrorless mode, using an EVF that has much more resolution and better refresh rates would be superior. Add in more resolution, 30fps, IBIS, ability to use EFS lenses, and ability to use RF lenses as they come out and you have a winner.

I think a R5 will fit your needs perfectly, get a R5 and wait for R1 it's both fast enough and high MP, I've tested both R3 and R5, honestly if I'm still with Canon right now I would pick R5 over R3 personally because R5 is a much better rounded camera than R3. 24MP in 2022 is just kind sad because look at the competition A1 is 50MP and Z9 is 45MP, I know R3 is not Canon flagship, but if it's not a flagship do not charge a flagship price, charge the A9II price $4500... If we don't need higher MP Canon would not be working on a R1 right now... I don't even know why Canon make a R3, they just need to put a 50MP sensor in it and call it R1 and people will be happily pay $7000 for it.

I don't even think we need 2 line of top model, Canon and Nikon both agreed, that's why Canon killed 1Ds line and Nikon killed whatever after D3x a long time ago, it's been more than 10 years and 3 generations(1DX-D4, 1DX2-D5, 1DX3-D6), I believe they did market research and not enough people buy the more expensive top model.

I would not buy the R3. In studio there will be nothing gain, and for sports 14 fps are more than enough.

I agree what everyone said here; if 24mpix are good enough for your work, the R3 is the best camera in the Canon eco system. If you'd like the higher resolution, the R5 will be great too.

However, I don't believe the R1 will be just a higher resolution version of the R3 with a few improvements. Expect everything on that camera to be improved (besides, perhaps, ergonomics / build quality) or even make a generation leap. That might be a big change like quad pixel AF, next gen EVF, but also unlimited 8k raw shooting like the Z9 has.

thanks for the reply....yes the sad part is that the 1DXII and III are not bringing much money now
I just sold my 1DXII for less than what i wanted....but as time goes on these cameras are going to be worth less and less - i am thinking i will get the R3 and then sell the IDXIII.....
