p.1 #1 · High Winds and Sandstorm on Death Valley Dunes

Last winter I was en route to camp at Death Valley National Park when everything other than day use was shut down. Camping at DV has a special vibe for me so I was bumming, but decided to go ahead and shoot a few days in the valley while ‘commuting’ from a Nevada small town campground. The winds on the Mesquite dunes were the highest I’ve experienced there and I was hoping the gear did not get damaged. These conditions gave a softer feel to the light as in the first image. For the second composition I converted to black & white and developed for more contrast, and this abstract became one of my favorite images of the trip. On my final day there a crazy sandstorm formed and I found an excellent vantage point of this surreal panoramic scene from the slope of an adjacent mountain [EDIT: more accurately, from the slope of an alluvial fan at the base of the mountains].

The b&w image is marvellous. A blistering sandstorm in Death Valley is an unforgettable experience, and I've been lucky to have experienced (and photographed in) it twice.

Thanks Rajan. How cool you have experienced a DV sandstorm twice! This was my first time seeing one out of about 10 visits the past couple decades.

Nicely done, especially the first one. (I know the subject and that "mountain" quite well, along with the potential for wild wind and blowing sand!)
Thanks for the good word Dan and for taking the time to look and comment! I bet you have had many amazing shoots there over the years. I crave being back right now.

I like them all... but number 3 is my favorite. I really enjoy getting the full view of the space.
Thank you @chris02324! That pano shot will read better if I print it large I think. Normally from that view one sees a rugged mountain range behind the dunes, but on that day it was nothing but dust, really amazing!
