My photo pals Z9 with Nikon 200-400VR 11 will only do eye focus in the verticle lens mode. It will do both verticle and horizontal mode with any other Nikon AF lens he has. His camera firmware is 2.10 . Anyone have any ideas to pass on.
We were at the Phoenix zoo on Monday and could not get it to lock onto animals eyes in landscape mode, only portrait mode.

I used dynamic large and wide large eye af.
I did try wide large with eye af off at the end and it worked better!! Eyes are kind of hard to see.
I didn't try c1 or c2, they might have woked pretty good too!! Lots of af mode to try!!
Thanks. I am finding that auto area with eye detect is working very well too for me. As long as an eye is visible. I have found that it needs to "see" to scene for a second or so (e.g. initiate tracking of the bird as early as possible) and once it has figured out where the bird is, then it doesn't let go as long as the eye is visible. TBH, it is making me a bit lazy and whereas I used to be able to perform the track myself with dynamic small, I have lost that skill to a large extent! Part of it is that I am shooting birds in much faster situations (e.g. the last half second of a landing) which happens so quickly if there is little wind.
I have a card full to process from last weekend so hope to do some of that tonight and will post anything interesting.

Eye af didn't work good with these birds. Lots of the time they were looking down before landing. The way their eyes are position seems to make eye af not so good. You are right about working better when seeing the scene for a second. My friend was hard headed and try the eye af for longer and we he switch to wide large with eye af off, his keepers went way up. We both were using the 400mm fl which is no slouch for af speed. I can't wait to try the 400mm 2.8s tc! I've heard focus is even a little bit faster and more accurate! I will also love the lighter weight. Hand holding a 8.5lbs lense for 8 hours get heavy lol

Latest birding effort with Z9 and 500 PF. Decided to get off the beaten track at my favourite spot and get into the denser bush and it was well worth the effort. Heaps of birds I had not seen in this area before. Spring plumage is in full swing for breeding season. Feather detail with the Z9 and 500 is astoundingly good even at high ISO's
More to come soon.

Two weeks ago fire smoke prevented me from hiking in the Mount Baker area. If at first you don't succeed...
This time the smoke stayed in the valleys below and I managed to get really close to this massive mountain. Ended up walking 20km with ~800m of elevation gain. Good day!

Assortment of shots from my first week with the Z9. No time to get out and chase birds yet. I did video record my son's football game from the press box and it performed so well for that! Very impressed with AF performance in general, it's everything it was sold to be...AF-C even on slower moving subjects is much more accurate than the Z7ii.
