A couple from this morning. Was cloudy so ISO were around 8000, tomorrow is suppose to be sunny so hopefully the Waxwings hang around longer. They should lots of berries for them at the park!
Oh, shot these in DX mode to try it out! I set up the video record button to allow me to switch between FX, DX etc last night. Works great and if in video mode it works for video only as expected!

I know my old D850 and my new Z9 have the same resolution, but the detail with the Z9 is on another level. This is cropped in about 100%

I was only able to get out briefly over the weekend and it was during worst (harsh) light and only a couple geese were moving at all.
It did give me a chance to play with Highlight Weighted Metering though.
Take what ya can get... :-)
500PF + 1.4xTC
The highlights and whites are rendered beautifully.

A few from this morning at the park. Was cloudy again and I was fighting to keep ISO down. Owl shots were from the car out the window. Was a pleasure since it was cold and windy!

A few burrowing owl shots from my lunch break today. Taken with the Z9 and 500mmpf. CC always welcomed and appreciated. Thanks
I find the out of focus area on the bottom distracting and you loose some detail on the subject. Try stopping down. Nothing wrong with showing some background and environment.

Interesting observation. I prefer the subject isolation personally. Thanks for the thoughts.

Since you asked, I agree with gdsf2 that the depth of field is a little too shallow on the Owl. I prefer the whole bird to be in focus and showing feather detail.
However, I have no problem with the OOF foliage. It shows environment without distracting detail.
In general these are nice shots. The Z9 looks like a great camera for lunch tiume!

Thanks for the input Steve. I shoot wide-open 99% of the time. I should probably try stopping down at times. I do see what you guys are saying now…… Thanks

Can you elaborate on this? I see no difference in terms of detail between my Z9 and Z7. Used to have a D850 and thought it was the same as Z7.

It may not be the sensor itself, but I see much more detail when I crop 100% on the Z9 than I did on my D850.
I am speculating that is is due to the fact there is no AF fine tuning needed as the AF comes right off the sensor. This making for critical focus instead of minute AF inaccuracy to fine tuning. Either way it can see slightly more detail on my 4k monitors. On one of my 1080p monitors there is no chance to see the differences.

Not sure. There are objective technological reasons why the Z9 should on average be able to tap better in the sharpness potential of the lens:
- more accurate and repeatable AF
- zero shutter shock
- more body weight
- for some lenses IBIS working together with VR
- when shooting portraits a more natural hand position ensure lower hand shake compared to a D850 without grip
None of these may play a role in some images but on average we should see a difference.
Finally the specs of the AA filter may not be exactly the same.

I prefer the way you shot these...I don't care if the rear half of the owl is in focus if it is facing me. I shoot wide open 100% of the time. There is a lot of veg around the owl...more DOF would just lose that dreamy look. Nice shots.
