I've recently circled back and re-added a 100-400 back into my lineup in order to best complement my 600PF. The prime is my workhorse birding lens, and while the 13ft MFD isn't a hindrance all that often, there are times/species when I need to be able to shoot close-close, and there's no better tool for that job than this 100-400. The 400 4.5 has been my sidekick close-up shooter for the past 6 months, and while there's no arguing that it's a utterly sublime lens, the 100-400 just serves much better in this role. I still have the 400 4.5, but it's probably not going to see much use going forward, and I'm debating its fate.
The 100-400 gets a bad rap from measurbaters and professional brick wall test chart shooters for its drop in performance after 300mm, to which I cannot role my eyes enough at because it doesn't make one shred of difference in the real world.

These shots look excellent. Did you stop down to 6.3 for depth of field or to improve sharpness @400mm@? Really nice
Thanks. I think it’s just a mistake. 🤪
At 400, the lens is wide open at it sharpest.
I had the 600PF with me as well, I think I left it at 6.3 after lens change.
