Very nice airshow shots. It seems the lens is excellent for the purpose.
Thanks. Yes these are all shot wide open and also heat haze was quite bad (38 degrees C) so I was pleased with the detail from the 100-400. Only issue was my shutter speeds were a bit too fast to get decent prop blur so I will have to work on that for next time

Haha! Curious about your hit rate, what tracking modes you tried, etc.
Hit rate was about 10% simply using Auto Area. No time to even think about switching to 3D once acquired. If you start OOF, you end OOF, but if you start in focus, the hit rate would improve for that burst. The zig-zagging nature means a LOT of shots where they are on the edge of the frame.

Thank you. Sounds like a lot of fun!

It's the conjunction of detail shots and BIF/longer range shots that go to show just how useful of a lens this is and why I'm saving the pennies for one right now instead of a 400/4.5 or 500/5.6 (which are both great lenses in their own right). Some of the denoise tools out there really help for the slightly higher ISO shots of moving objects also.

Absolutely a swiss army knife which makes it perfect for travel if you want distant landscapes, near-macros, portraits and wildlife. It doesn't do any of these better than other specialty lenses of course, but it does very, very well for all of them and I wouldn't take all of those lenses with me traveling. Packaged up in a 70-200 size lens and it's a win for me.
