I'm a little torn but will probably get this lens. It has been tough buying into a new system from its launch, because there are lenses I've bought that I might not have if they'd all been available from the start. And selling my 24-70 f/4 right now might be challenging, since I expect a lot of them to appear on the used market all of a sudden. But I think I'll try to sell it and my 35mm 1.8 S to get the 24-120.

I actually love the 35 but now I own the 40 and have the 28 on preorder, and I do value the compactness as an option, so ... tough call.

24-70/4Z is a good gun-and-run lens for video because 24-120/4Z is bit too heavy and bulky for that, especially when your entire rig is on a gimbal held by one hand. I see a flood of 35Z/50Z on the b&s board. I've never used them myself so don't know why there is a rush to get rid of them.

May be there are people moving over to 40mm/2.8 for smaller footprint.

I preordered 24-120 and 100-400 as these 2 will form versatile combo.
With 14-30, these 3 lenses will become perfect Landscape package. I am sure quickly this combo will become popular among hiker or travel photographers who likes to carry light weight but minimum set of quality lenses...

Just got email from NPS, "Your NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S lens has shipped to....."

Thats good news, now I have a FTZII, a 24-120 on the way! Now wonder if it all will fit on my D850 or D500! lol

Anyway getting there now, 100-400 in the next couple of days then Z9 I suspect!

Ordered from the Nikon Store ala' NPS on the 12th, shipped today, arrives on Tuesday.
I am hoping this will be a great single lens option for ski season.

The reason I say hoping is because the F mount version was lackluster on the D810 onward if at either end of the zoom range. If it is as good as the 24-70 F4 is on the Z7II I will be more than satisfied.

The 35 is excellent, the 50 is plain outstanding. Very close to Otus level of performance. One of the best deals in the history of photographic equipment.

Great to see that the 24-120 is shipping in the US. Nikon Japan still says Feb-2022.

Cheers,
Bernard

I was hesitant to order the 24-120 since I already own the 24-200, which is a good landscape lens.
Mine is being shipped as well. I'll decide which one to keep after comparing the 2 lenses. I have a feeling
I might stick with the longer reach of the 200 since I shoot at F8-F11 most of the time for landscapes anyway. I have other lenses for other things.

Didn’t ordered the lens (yet) as I have the 24-200 as well, so I’m very interested in your findings.

I'll do some testing shooting simple landscapes with both lenses at the same time without moving the tripod
and see what we find. I'll bet there is little difference since the 24-200 is a good lens for the money. However,
I might end up keeping the 24-120 just because I'll let you know what I think.

I played a bit with this lens at my local dealer yesterday. Very sharp and light lens.
Almost tempted to get it but I have 24-70/2.8s, 24-50, 24-200 already.
I think I need to stop buying lenses

@ksmmike will be super interested to see comparison of landscapes at F/8 and F/11. Exactly my use case as well.

Carry light? That's >3kg of just camera gear, probably 5kg if you add a tripod. Maybe lightweight compared to medium format

Thanks! Very curious how they will compare. I actually expect the 24-200 to be a bit better at 100-120mm and the 24-120 to be better at shorter focal lengths.

I think you’re right. The 24-200 is more or less a F8 lens for me. Good, but I often like to use F4. I probably end up having both too. 😁

I got my 24-120 F4 today...I'm truly impressed.

Basically the primary reason I got this lens is for a one lens solution for ski/mountaineering photography on my Z7II in which when I use DX mode at 120mm and then process in Adobe Super Resolution in raw, I end up with essentially a 24-200 F4. How I arrive at this (if needed) is I crop the up rezzed DX image back down to native Z7II dimensions as it goes from 20MP to 77MP when using Super Resolution. Details are outstanding even at F4 when up rezzed from the 120mm setting DX cropped to 180mm. I now have *the* perfect ski/mountaineering lens.

In terms of corner performance, It's better than the 24-70 F4 at either end at F4-7.1-ish and better at the 70mm end at F4 than the 70-200 2.8 S is @70mm F4. The 70-200 2.8S @ 120mm is a fair bit better than the 24-120 from F4 to 6.3 and the 24-70 2.8 is a bit better at either end than the 24-120 at either end at F4-5.6.

Flare resistance, color and contrast is excellent. It feels just like the specs would have you imagine, a lens that in terms of weight fits squarely in-between the 24-70 F4 and 24-70 F2.8 and in regards to size is still in the middle of the two but more towards the 24-70 F2.8.

I suspect I will keep my 24-70 F4 for video and when I need to go as light as possible. But otherwise, this will be a go to lens for a lot of work in moderate to bright light.

I look forward to seeing the more serious tests as people get this lens, I think it's a winner.

Can anyone do some sunstar tests on this lens and post here. I have never been happy with the quality of sunstars from the existing crop of f4 lenses. Have the 14-24 to cover me on the wide end. Have to decide what to do in the mid range. Trying to avoid the expense and weight of the 24-70/2.8

I never heard of Adobe Super Resolution. Glad you mentioned it. New tool in the kit. Thanks.

There is an image in Flicker group Nikkor Z 24-120mm F4 S, with "Merry Christmas" title, the Christmas tree decoration was shot at 120/F4.
I think, it's worth it to take look to see how beautiful rendering and separatiation, amazing.
I can't wait to see more images by this lens, especially at both ends.
