Given the amount of data the Z9 can process, imagine we are just a firmware update away from 30 fps in high efficiency RAW
Sounds like wishful thinking. Given Nikon managed to implement all needed firmware for the lower speeds, why in the world would they have skipped 30fps? Maybe there is a limit you don't know about?
p.31 #4 · "Nikon Z9 vs Sony A1 – The 10 main differences"
Everything is possible ! But we all know the Z9 was rushed in some areas and firmware updates are coming notably for video: we have seen an update to allow more continuous shooting for RAW+JPEG, so I would say there is a good chance although not 100% certain

Sure. And I just happen to have a bridge to sell.

I'll happily agree with the "not 100% certain" part of your assessment.

After 30 pages, we have come down to what advantage is there, to shoot jpeg vs raw, in the real world, for a discussion on two of the most advanced camera from Nikon and Sony.

I wish Fred would allow threads to span a lot of forums .. I'd
- start one titled "Sony vs Canon vs Nikon vs Fuji vs Olympus vs The Others"
- sit back with some scotch and watch folks tear each other to pieces

On the contrary, I'd prefer there was no option to cross-post .
I've never read anywhere else (around here) so many disrespectful and ignorant (to downright hostile) comments as in the cross-posted threads...

I never understood your enjoyment of that kind of BS. There are other websites and forums for that kind of behavior. Here on FM most of us aspire to better. Disagreement? Yes that has value when done with respect, and makes discussions interesting. There is one Forum here on FM where the vitriol is higher that the others. This was the result of a temporary delta in technical competence of the product line. That is now quickly improving, so I hope the tenor of that forum will also improve. The rest of the FM community is generally very positive and respectful.

Ah the Great Understander is here.
You, my friend, are one of the most argumentative guys on FM, along with some regular characters from other forums.
I enjoy watching argumentative folks go at each other - it's fun for me.

You even threatened to get me banned by Fred over PM .. or did you forget your little attempt a few months ago?
ha ha. Pathetic, man. Go argue with someone lesser than you - maybe they'll be scared.
Hide me to the rescue. Now back to the regular programming ... sorry for the rude interruption.

No, not everything is possible. That's just a feel good pep talk that seldom pans out in real life. If Nikon wants to enable 30fps hi efficiency raw, it would have enabled it by now since it takes no effort at all to enable it from the software side since the coding is already there in FW. There is just a number in FW that says allow hi efficiency below this fps and disable it above. The reason, there is not enough cpu cycles available to handle coding that at 30fps. So unless the hardware is upgraded, I just don't see it coming.

Well, unless you have some inside information from Nikon engineering, and have already looked at the Z9 processor loading profile, or its firmware architecture and the associated timing constraints, etc., I am not sure how you have concluded so strongly that the bottleneck is the CPU load, and there is nothing that the firmware can do, and "there is just a number in FW"! I have developed and managed embedded HW and SW for 20+ years now, and I have seen many times where we have managed to work around the perceived HW/processor constraints by re-designing certain FW modules, etc. Now, you may be right, and there may be no further optimization that Nikon could do to enable this without a new processor. But you may be wrong, and Nikon may be able to further optimize their FW and still support this with the existing processor in Z9. Without looking at the details of their analysis and implementation, I just don't know!

The point wasn't that it is impossible, just that it is so unlikely that its a waste of time to speculate about it. There even could be some way to sufficiently improve the bandwidth, say by re-introducing EVF blackout or something. That helps a buyer zilch unless Nikon decides to do it. Were I a betting man, I would accept high bets that Nikon has already looked *very* hard at whether RAW can be done at 30fps. It's the #1 glaring feature missing in comparison with the A1. And they didn't do it. Nor did they even hint at being able to improve this spec down the road. Meanwhile virtually every product launch is accompanied by enthusiastic folks, who deny any criticism with "that will be fixed in firmware". Sure. Tell that to all those mark one Z owners, who would like a firmware to finally provide decent AF. Of course this isn't a Nikon thing. A galore of Sony and Canon cameras got similar fan praise for never materializing firmware miracles.

Would have been more useful to read peoples findings on the strengths and weaknesses that's actually used both cameras with various lenses.
When I first got the A1 the idea was to use it with the 200-600 until Nikon released their flagship mirrorless . I still have my Nikon D850 and a few lenses , I was going to get the Z9 + 500mm PF (I like the 500mm PF) but after owning the A1 for almost a year I must admit I enjoy using it . With the 200-600 its not perfect but really appreciate the customisation and EVF .
Threads like this could have been useful for us thinking of going from one system to the other.
