I did an AB comparison of rendering with the 70-200mm, 135mm gm , 85mm dg dn. I sold off my 135mm gm and kept my 85mm dg dn. The 135mm gm rendering to me is not much better than the 70-200mm gm. Both are equally harsh in the transition regions...
I am still waiting for an updated Sony telephoto that renders like the 85mm gm.
Aside from the fact that judgement of "rendering" is highly subjective, I think the reason many people have a 135/1.8 prime is because of the f/1.8 aspect of it. It's the fastest telephoto prime you can buy before getting into the silly-money white prime teles and, all else being equal, it's that speed that gives it an advantage over a 70-200/2.8.

Normally I post at 1500 pixels for the long side. Doing that on this image results in a 785 KB file that is badly pixilated when enlarged at all. So I went to a 1500 pixels for the short side which gave a much nicer (although 7.4 MB) file that doesn't fall apart too rapidly. And then hit the 1.4 MB limitation for posting and used that for an image that falls apart if enlarged much.
This is a pano of about 20 shots done at the 70mm end of the 70-200mm range. The detail of the final images is quite striking and I am able to pick out hikers on the trail in the far right of the picture. The final DNG file is 992 MB and a "best jpeg" rendition is 162 MB and I can zoom and zoom into the image and still see things I hadn't noticed before.
I really like the sharpness of this lens.
