I found my old nisi close-up lens in the drawer and looked how this combination works. I know that I am not the typical purpose of a 70-200mm lens in f/2.8. But the results are not bad at all and are better than a crop from my a7iv.
On the left, the 70200GM2 with the close-up lens@200mm, on the right, the 70200GM2 without the close-up lens@72mm, i.e. the native largest possible magnification.

That looks very interesting. I have just bought this lens with an eye on close-up subjects. Have you tried using a 1.4x teleconverter for this type of thing?

That 1.4x will set you back more than that. Yet very highly recommended. Who wouldn’t like to have a 280mm f4 ?
I am surprised how well the 1.4tc pairs with you 70-200gm Mkii. There is no perceivable hit in IQ or AF which is amazing. The results are razor sharp. I will be comparing the close up ability with the 1.4tc soon. And yes 280mm F4 is sweet…such a versatile combo

Interesting... So how well does the lens work with AF and the close up lens? And do you get 1:1 magnification? I hadn't considered getting a close up lens over a dedicated macro, but if the results are close to the FE90 macro or Sigma 105 macro, and I get a 200mm working distance, the 70-200 plus the close up lens sure looks promising. Do you have more image samples?

What’s the stock/availability like on these right now? I’ve been in back order hell since December and I’m wondering if I need to cancel or chargeback. I got a decent price but the retailer has been less than helpful. It’s unclear if they are at the mercy of delayed Sony shipments or screwing me around.

B&h seems to get them in stock every two weeks or so so probably easiest to just order through them. I walked into my local shop a month ago and walked out with one.

B&H now (past few days anyway) says "Expected availability: Jun 16, 2022". Adorama and many other sites have updated from "out of stock" to "back ordered", which suggests availability has moved from a specific time frame to "TBD".
For example, the company I work for, one of largest global CPG companies, uses fairly standard industry terms: "out of stock" for temporary or sporadic low inventory situations. These usually have estimated "next supply" and "get well" dates, which are shared with resellers. It means we have product in the supply chain, and active production in process.
We use "back order" when there is a long term supply constraint. In that case, there is no product in the supply chain, and production has been halted. At some point, after the issue has been identified and there is a definitive plan to resolve, and we have a date we can re-start production, we will share with resellers a date they can expect their first resupply.
