But it shouldn't come as a surprise, every S lens has been performing at least as well as the best competitor offering. That is even against lenses released more recently.
In this case they offer on top of optical performance a very lightweight and compact design for such a lens.
Finally, they even seem able to ship this lens in significant amounts on time... and they are manufacturing it in Japan for those still not trusting the Thai factory.
Not sure I agree with the "significant amounts on time" part. Very few non NPS orders have been fulfilled and it is now sold out everywhere. The next shipment is "probably some time in January" to quote a few shops I have spoken with. My preorder was placed a few hours after availability and has not shipped yet.
This is not sour grapes, just an observation. The lens is going to be much more available than a Z9 but Nikon is not going to be meeting demand for a few more months.
The very nice UPS man just delivered my 100-400 lens and 1.4 teleconverter.
As I use the 500PF almost exclusively for several years on my Z7 and Z7ii I’m very familiar with it’s focusing speed and acquisition. After a few minutes with the 100-400 with and without the 1.4 TC I think it’s faster. The light is horrible right now so I’m not actually taking bird photographs, maybe I’ll harass the felines. If the light is good later I’ll try a few test shots.

That’s sounding good on the AF compared to your 500PF.
I received my 100-400 yesterday, also *not* NPS.
Initial tests show very sharp wide open in center, and tack sharp into every furthest corner at f/8 (did not check corners wide open).

Sounds awesome, congrats! My 24-120 and 100-400 comes via UPS today but I don't have a mirrorless yet to try it. The Z9 was shipped to my camera store just waiting for them to ship to me. Probably won't have everything until next week! I use the 500pf and 600VR on the D500 and D850
Keep us posted, sounds very promising! I also have a TC 2.0 I want to try with it if nothing else for dragonflies and flowers etc.
Anyone try a replacement foot with this lens yet? The one for the 70-200 and 500pf do not fit. Thought I read somewhere that they did! Well at least the RRS LCF-11 doesn't which fits both the 70-200 and 500pf!

I put a Hejnar foot on mine before I ever mounted it to a body. It's the same model foot as on my z70-200S lens. The mount is the same, but the ARCA Swiss foot is offset different on the 500PF vs. the z70-200S & z100-400S.

If you haven't already seen Brad Hill's post, here is what he said on the RRS foot:
"If you have forked out way too much money for a Arca-Swiss compatible tripod foot for your 70-200mm f2.8S (like I did when I bought the LCF-21 from Really Right Stuff for my 70-200mm f2.8S) you can feel good that you can now use it with TWO lenses - the mount on the 100-400 is identical to that of the 70-200mm f2.8S."

Just tried both Kirk and RRS foot that fit my F mount 70-200/2.8E and they will not mount on the 100-400mm. Neither does the foot from F 80-400G.
Looks like I need to pick up an arca compatible foot that fits Z 70-200/2.8 S.

Kirk LP-70 works and looks like Adorama has a used one in stock for $79 if anyone needs it. I already ordered a new one. The RRS is steep at $120. I have the similar Kirk for my F mount 70-200 and it’s great.

Thank you! I guess it needs to be the one for the S version 70-200 then (Z 70-200). That's the one that should fit!
Yep, per Brad Hill's blog "If you have forked out way too much money for a Arca-Swiss compatible tripod foot for your 70-200mm f2.8S (like I did when I bought the LCF-21 from Really Right Stuff for my 70-200mm f2.8S) you can feel good that you can now use it with TWO lenses - the mount on the 100-400 is identical to that of the 70-200mm f2.8S."
Ordered the foot several weeks ago, but no Z 100-400 yet to try it on.
