Interesting. I was thinking of getting the 800mm to complement this one since the 2X RF extender is almost as much as the 800mm refurbished from Canon haha. You wouldn’t recommend the 800?

I'm tempted in getting this now with the 2x tc and sell my 800 F11. I rented it a couple of weeks ago:

I think the 800 punches way above its weight. Results are quite good even with the 1.4 (haven't had a 2x to test with--yet). Frankly the combo of the 100-400, 800, and a tele would be a serious kit in a sling bag for a walk in the woods. Not much you couldn't deal with and it would weigh basically nothing. I have the 100-500, which is awesome, but the size/weight of the 100-400 is pretty tempting. Might have to pick one up.
I had been thinking out this lens and have seen some great results and reviews. I decided when I was able to get an excellent used copy with a box for $450, I'd give it a shot. Paired with the R3 outside shooting some Drumline and Soundsport, its versatility was great.

gotta have more cowbell
for $450 the 200-400mm range looks great.
the 100-200mm results are not to my taste, but $450 is still worth it even to never use the short end (defer that to 70-200 lens)
i wonder if a more compact RF 400 f5.6L would ever be brought out...
Yes, that one is typical of the RF 100-400 wide open. The slight glow around high contrast edges, perhaps in part from post processing. I´m not familiar with the R6´s, but I get the same result with the R5, R7 and previously with R10.
At f/9 my images are far better, if anything can be _far_ better from the f/8 level. Especially at that weight and price point. Well, I have no direct comparisons. But the (many thousands from hunting colour ring marked caspian terns ) of BIF against whitish heavens are better at f/9 than at f/8.
